I think that your crazy fills sound great in 4/4 and 6/8.  Why can't you do it in 7 or 5 or 10 or 13?  I would love to here that.  Not to put you all down but to expand you all as musicians.

Dude...I REALLY hope the website that you linked in your profile isn't you playing. That "Charley Wilson" joint is a BLATANT 4/4 groove and frankly it sounds like you can't even hold that down. The timing was off, the PHrasing was poor, and it basically just sounded like poor attempts at "gospel/r&b" licks :-\

So my question is why are you inquiring about odd-times when it sounds like you haven't even mastered the basics ?/?

I understand that gospel music is in 4/4 or 6/8.  Yes I do watch youtube, Yes I play in church.  But do you not notice that pretty much all gospel drummers sound pretty much the same.  Yes I do understand playing the genre.  I would love to hear other advanced material going on in the back ground.  I myself, love to switch up meters and to move the time around depending on the fraising.  Just listen to my jack trading 4 track.  The song is in 4/4 but I sub 5/4 time signature that is still the same length as the 4/4 time.  Implied Time just one of the many tricks that I use.

Poet, how bout you write a gospel song in one of these odd meters and tell me how it works out. I've heard a couple odd metered gospel songs....there's a reason only a few more of us have bro. If you know how to execute a fill, then the meter doesn't even matter. You wanna hear US play different meters? Come to any of the sheds we're always throwing.
D.O.D. has a few odd metered joints on his project, as do I. Jeremy Haynes and Calvin Napper do also. Now that that I think about it, the only time we play straight is when we're ACCOMPANYING someone. GO FIGURE
Here's a question....are you posing this same question to the guys playing behind Faith Hill or Kenny Chesney ?/? ?/? What about the girls playing behind Beyonce or Musiq Soulchild?? I'm sure you'll get the same answers. Let me know

...tell us how you really feel Calvin. lol

Simple Question...99% of the time its called staying in your lane...do you try to drive a big 18 wheeler off the road?.....
being a musician means you're supposed to accopany someone unless you got your own gig and you call the shots but you still have to say in your lane.

most gospel and r&b use those that timing....get over it. Just because you don't hear it on Amazing grace or a Fred tune doesn't mean that drummer can't do it. Professionals do what is required so you won't get fired....take heed.

I totally agree with CRod, although I'm curious to know which records he's listening 2. Becasue theirs been tons of records that drummers have stretched the time of 4/4 and 6/8 I've heard a couuple of records where CRod played 3 against the 4 or the 5 against the 6 and I can't send you a list of the records I've done it on. See please understand "my man" "English" is english, "Spanish is spanish, "French" isfrench for a very specific reason, its so the people that live in your  country can always understand, comprehend and enjoy it in it's simplest form. ALTHOUGH you are more respected when you can speak the language no matter where you are. So please understand just because its not being played doesn't mean we don't know how to play it. Pro's or mature musicians never force they're will on a song merely for the listeners. If the moment calls for it then it happens. So I'm with CRod I'm really interested to see how that plays out also. So post something so "We" can see where your coming from.

Why is it that gospel musicians are criticized for not being able to play everything under the sun, but other genre's of music are just as repetitive, if not more so? Gospel music has evolved over the decades, but I don't see why it has to evolve to the point where it incorporates element's from every genre of music...

People who love gospel don't care about the repetition. When you do not connect with a genre, the repetition is almost all you can really hear.

I think that your question is not a bad question at all. However it could be taken as offensive to many here on the forum. I think that will be a very valuable experience for you ( the replies from Mr. Rodgers & Mr. Haynes).
Don't take it as a negative thing, take it as a learning experience. Also, to those who found his question and comments offensive, it's alright y'all, we all have to learn... some learn valuable lessons in some of the toughest ways and others learn in more 'gentle' ways. I'm actually glad this post happened cause God has opened my understanding of time (I never had any formal training) recently and I am learning the basics of time (whole, halves, quarters, eighths, and sixteenths... haven't learned to count 30&60 second notes yet), and I didn't know that you guys substituted odd-meters during common time variations. That's incredible!
I'll be excited once God opens up my understanding of advanced time (counting 30&60 sec. notes, counting odd-meters, etc.). This thread has taught me something spiritually, also: Humility is priceless, yet very costly!

Speaking as a Minister of Music, I'm glad that most gospel drummers remember not to stray too far from the essence of a song.  If the song is in 4/4 and a drummer decides to go to a 7/8 sequence, the average listener (i. e., the majority of the people we're ministering to) will feel lost until the drummer gets back to "the beat".

I've written one song that's in 5/4 time.  The drummers at my tiny little church were not able to play it, but the drummer from one of the other churches in our district played it and he did just fine.

To use an overly broad "y'all" statement, I love y'all!
