Except for the "D-Mixolydian" part, your way only runs the E major scale. The way his teacher is showing him, he's running E, D, and A major scales. This would give a different sounds than what you're suggesting.

This guy does what his teacher is suggesting at the end of this video. The gist of it is that you can run any scale, as long as you end on a tone in the original key.

Sorry, I meant D-Lochrian.  Unfortunately, I can't watch videos at work anymore so, I'll check it out when I get home.  From your description, I'm guesssing his way would add more color to the song?

First hear are the scale degrees, and Modes, but I have a question...

Torch, where's the question?

Yes I have a working knowledge of modes.  I was just wondering how would you know which notes to use when you start feeling the song and want to put some runs and stuff in it. So you wont sound like a robot just playing something the guy playing the keys can play with his left hand.  I dont want to fill every iota of sonic space, just enough to groove with the drummer to add more "feel" to it.

From the initial statement, I thought of this as an assignment from your instructor, something between just you and him.  In that case, I wouldn't worry about how the drums would fit in yet.  Those are two seperate issues.

I would first try and understand where he's trying to take me to and then later try and see how I would apply it to my playing.  Regardless of what anybody on this site says, it all boils down to what your instructor wants.  Why don't you just ask him?

LOL! It's called typing and when your mind is somewhere else...  I was going to ask him did he ask for clarity from his instructor.  If you are paying you gotta make sure he answers all your questions.

I have question, what would be an example of practicing chord tones in
every key and connecting modes with the chord tones ?

He's basically doing a trial and error type thing.  He was telling me that those modes fit over the cords in the song.  He wants me too "improvise", because he says that, "most gospel music is about improvisation and syncopated rhythms."  My question boils down to this.  What are the rules if any of creating a signature grove that  fits over the song using those modes.  He just explained to me how the modes fit in the frame of the key signature which is E major(Ionian).  Thanks a lot for all the feed back, it's really opening my eyes to lots of stuff.  Shout out to Sean, please make more videos breaking it down.  I checked out your old videos on Torch's site.  That shout run almost made me put my bass down and start crying, lol, cause I ain't no where near to that level, but praise God for growth.

You guys are definitely doing some good things over there at gospelbasslines.com. I'm working on a project, which I'm sure will make us cross paths. I look forward to meeting you, when that happens! :)
