Fair enough, Rown; don't make Prince and Dubose bigger than they are ;)

You know, if I were to play anyone's memorial, I would understand that i'm there to pay respect, not pull out a bag o' flash to make everyone look at me. 'King' or not...

Watched video again.Sorry men, does nothing for me.Reason i asked why was he there. Was he a  friend of Michael`s?Did they work together.Maybe they did, just asking.Somebody said he held back.Well, he should have stayed home. You do not half step when it comes to the King.Michael NEVER HELD BACKED, PLEASE. ?/?THIS IS MY LAST POST ON THIS.There were more things to focus on that day, than Jonh Mayer perfomance.I like his music, even if he do not write his own music. ;)He is a okay guitar player.Do not make him bigger than what he is.Nothing great about this guy.He is okay, that`s it. 8)

how many times did mj collab with Mariah or Jennifer Hudson?? and as far as i know, Mayer writes his own music. i think he was trying to show respect by playing with restraint and respecting the moment...still wasn't my fav, but imho he was trying not to upstage the moment. i was never trying to imply he needed more flash...just that i didn't dig it nearly as much as other times i've heard him play. but let's be honest, most of the performers weren't very good...whehter it was due to emotions or sound issues, no one was great. (and jennifer hudson id one of my fav singers, girl can blow)

and i have to imagine if it were Micahel paying tribute at someone's funerla, yes, he would have held back...

I've had to perform at several funerals/memorial services, including those of both my parents.
After reading some of these comments (specifically rown's), all I can say is that I'm glad that some of y'all were not in attendance to tell me afterwards what a poor job I did.

Look, I don't think that Mayer was there to show the world that he's such a bad *$$ on guitar.  He was there to pay tribute to a musical icon and performed an arrangement of one of his best-known songs as he saw fit.  I don't think that this context is really for us to judge how good or overrated of a musician John Mayer is.  Now he could very well be overated....he might even (dare I say) suck in some people's opinion and that's fine.  But in this case, I think we should leave it alone and focus on the main thing wich was Michael Jackson's memorial service.

Dave, I can not even imagine what that is like.

I watched my father play and sing 'Go Rest High On That Mountain' at my grandmother's funeral just this February. This was his mother.

He stood statuesque and faced her directly. It wasn't a perfect performance, but there wasn't one person there left untouched afterwards.

It puts a lot of stuff into perspective...

My brother and I are huge JM fans.. I think he did a very nice job. Great tone. I really wish he had sang at least a little. I think he was the perfect choice for that song.

Dave, sorry to hear about your parents. But,i see you and your buddy Jlynnb1.Never attended or played at a black person funeral.See men,it is a homegoing, and celebration.Hopefully, you goin to be with the LORD.THAT IS CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION.For you guys,to say he was holding back.Man that is silly.Jay-p,how did Prince name get throw into the mix.Prince over- rated?Prince sold out the Stable center, three nites in a row.Mayer can`t sell out the men RESTROOM.THAT JUST KEEEPING IT REAL. 8)That performance was 101 guitar,if that much.He acted as he was afraid to play.Maybe because he never played in front of that many folks, and never will again 8).If Dave said the Atlanta Hawks, won the NBA championship this year. Then jlynnb1, would say they was great. Then Jay-p,yea Shag made them a better team.Hoo-ray for the Hawks. ;)

Can you just stop lying and assuming and stereotyping and generalizing and whatever other kind of 'ing that it is that you usually do?

I am trying to have patience and extend grace, but you make it so difficult every time you act like you know it all.
Honestly, if your contributions on this forum are to do nothing but cause trouble and division in the body, I ask that you either stop it or please take that spirit elsewhere.

Rown, I wouldn't know the 1st thing about the NBA, and aside from that, there are plenty of things that jlynn, dave and I severely disagree on.

I never said prince was overrated, I just said not to make him bigger than he is, and then I followed it with a wink.

Calm down, and quit trying to tear people down just for the sake of it, please.

I have no hard feelings with you, i'm just keeping it real :)

that's exactly what i'm saying....i know he was trying to be aware of the moment, and i'm not saying he sucked, just saying it wasn't the my fav performance of his.

and i do think him being asked/hired to play at someone's funeral that he'd probably never met is a bit different than what you had to go through Dave...I can't imagine even trying to play in that situation.

I am requesting to hear Rown, Jlynnb1, Dave, Jay and others play a solo jam to this same MJ track to see how they would pull it off.

Personally, I think Mayer did a very good job.

You won't miss anything if you just chill on the attitude a bit.  ;)
You are allowed to share your opinion just like any one of us, but when you start getting into the negative generalizations about people is when I and others get turned off.

SG, as far as the jam goes, if we can find a backing track, I'm all for giving it a go for fun.  :)

sancitified, i was never saying mayer sucked or that i could do better...just that it wasn't my fav performance of his, and that's really all i was trying to say. now others in the thread have implied that he str8 up was an embarassment, and i couldn't disagree more.

The memorial service was not the time nor the place to "show-out". Folks, the spirit was in the air and the performers all felt it when they saw that casket at the foot of the stage. I think everyone song and played with love, honor and respact in their hearts.
However, if this had been in "chuch" down the road there would have been some "sho-nuff-cut-n-up" in the pews. Get my drift?

Now let's move on.

I am requesting to hear Rown, Jlynnb1, Dave, Jay and others play a solo jam to this same MJ track to see how they would pull it off.

Personally, I think Mayer did a very good job.

If I can find the time, I'm down for that.

Actually, I've never heard Rown play at all... Let's do it  :)

And, Rown, just so we are clear, I have respect for everyone here, and I don't try to argue (I think when I respond via the blackberry, I lose even more communication skills. It's hard enough just through typing, but if you take away the emoticons... well, then it's just horrible lol).

Regardless, I appreciate the compliment, and it actually seems like you've got me nailed, as I am pretty open to all music, but I wouldn't say that what Mayer pulled out was anything near "guitar 101."

What I mean by that is a young guitar player may be able to play that same thing note for note, but what you will miss is the nuance and control (vibrato, dynamics, etc.). Well, that, and maybe the silly faces.  ;D (besides, I remember you saying once about soloing... and I quote:
Relax, keep it simple, target notes, tasteful. You are the human being.Master the guitar. You are the boss.Make the guitar sound, and do as you see fit.I refuse to let an instrument, defeat me.No-way,not in this lifetime. The devil is a liar.May sound cocky, but this is my approach 8)IT DO NOT HAVE TO BE FASSSSST

(I added the first bold for emphasis... the second one was there already)

Prince an Dubose are fine musicians, they were just brought up because they seem to be the litmus test around here, for some unknown reason.  ?/?

Anyhow... no hard feelings, but this is a call to all on here to actually listen to each other (er... read thoroughly...)

So, if anyone knows of that backing track, or a similar one, let's do this.

Or, if I get the time and the nerve, maybe I'll finally lay down that 80's ballad thing... but it kinda owned me lol. I'm not gonna lie.
