Fatigued forearms?
« on: July 13, 2009, 03:53:58 PM »
Has anybody experienced fatigued forearms? It was almost hard to hold the sticks yesterday. I played all 5 services at a local church here in town and after the 1st one my hands started aching. Problem is, this hasn't happened in a long time. I constantly work on my technique and understand the idea of letting gravity do the work, and I'm always working towards that. I haven't arrived of course. In the past, my hands would get fatigued and cramped. This time is was both my hands and forearms. My forearms are way sore today.

I was wondering if I should be concerned about this or if you guys have any advice to share. Could it be an early sign of something I could prevent?

I'm no doctor but I would say get it checked out if it prohibits you from doing everyday activities, but it could be as simple as overload man. No matter how much you work on technique and other methods, you still have a breaking point or a point to where you just need to stop before you hurt yourself. 5 services dude? Wow!

If the pain doesn't stop or that happens again then I would be concerned. If that doesn't happen again then you know you have limits and you overworked yourself that time. I've never had that happen, but I've never played 5 services in one day either.

Thanks for the response bro. Thing is, I've done the 5 services thing before, and I've been playing more than ever lately. You know, the night before I practiced on pillows for the first time for just a short couple of minutes, but it did burn the forearms a little bit now that I think about it. Maybe that was it. Anyway, I ain't tryna have no carpool tunnel syndrome creep up on a brotha ya feel me?

Only if I don't warm up.

Do you perform a lengthy warm up to get your muscles warmed up and do you stretch your forearm muscles?  Also check the tension in your grip and stick size.

I definitely didn't get enough time to warm up. I don't usually stretch my forearm muscles, no.

I'm using Vic Firth Extreme 5A's. I have big hands.

Maybe it was just a warm up thing. After service 5 I was hurting man.

I know I am late on this....but if you are using the same technique as you always have, and didn't do anything different.....It could be tendonitis from not only drumming but other things in life.  If so, you would want to take an anti inflammatory, and give your arms rest.  If you ever ran track and had shin splints, its the same thing.

Another possibility could also be thatyou are simply building muscle.  WHen was the last time you played that much in a day?  If it has ben a while, you may have lost some of that muscle and endurance.  You body may repairing the tissue much like after a good weight session.
