My name being thrown in the mud.. Need help! Advice
« on: July 29, 2009, 01:27:35 PM »
In short:

I paid 1 guy to put my band together for my debut concert. I made the contract with him and paid 1/2 30days prior to the event. The balance I paid in a check 2 days after the event. Both cheks got cashed.

Now 2 weeks later I get a call that it is being said that I did not pay the band and that what i did pay was short. I spoke with 2 of the band member myself to get the story. each had different stories but basically the same.  I bounced a check and the other that I was going to pay the rest on my payday. For th other 2 who did get paid by him, they said he told them he would pay out of " his own pocket" and then wait for me to pay up the rest of the money.

Now I called the guy and he tried to act brand new on me. he sent me a text saying " Ni...a stop trippin I paid everybody last week" etc.... " you ned to relax and go pray or something" ?/?

Basically he blew me off.

I'm really in a catch 22

I'm saved - but I dont play with money
I'm saved - but I'm not that deep on being disrepected

Now the final issue is the musicians have been spreading this story because they are HIS... friends and really had no reason NOT to believe him. I only got wind of it because my producer heard about it and he Knows me so he called to let me know what was being said.

If I had not reached out to these guys from the band they would not have even known.  I sent them copies of the contract as well as the cashed check printouts and they were surprised and one even said " sorry man I usually do not talk to the artist but I'm glad I did cause I would not have known the whole story"

I don think I can let this one go with some form of response or something!!!

Provide proof of what you have done and ask the other dude to do the same.

It seems to me you've already cleared this up with proof that you did exactly what was asked of you.  I would not continue to chase this down. It makes you look bad.  Turn the rest over to God and let him fight for you.  The truth sometimes takes longer to circulate, but it does come out.  Just keep your records so that you can produce them should any questions continue to arise.

Your name is clean, because you have paperwork and signatures to back your side up.  Bidness is bidness.  Those cats should just simply know that their supposed friend straight up stiffed them and tried to throw you under the bus to save his own behind.  Of course this is your last time fooling with him right?  You also might want to forward them your text from him stating that he paid them.

Schedule a meeting with everyone.  Good chance ole boy will be conveniently busy.  Or you can make a plan to meet with "only him" and when he gets there, everybody else is already there too so that he can't back out.  Then you can hit him with the paperwork and cashed checks in front of everybody and set things straight.

In the words of the Wu Tang Clan......."PROTECT YA NECK!!!!!!"

I have cats that still owe me money after 10+ years for stuff I;ve done.  I let it go, but I aint forgot.

Probably the administrator in me, but I'm very big on documentation.

I'd draft a letter, detailing everything that was said and done, as well as the final dissolution of the matter (not to exceed 1 page, if possible).  It might help if you attach copies of the checks that were cashed or any other relevant evidence.

Be humble, be wise (try to write as you imagine Jesus or Solomon would), don't be sarcastic, condescending or arrogant.  Be apologetic for any inconvenience this mix-up may have caused.  Be professional... and most importantly, be Christ-like.

Close the letter by extending them an offer to call you if they would like to discuss it further or have any questions.

After you've written the letter, I'd dispose of the matter completely.  Give it over to Jesus and let Him fix it.  You've done your part by trying your best to bring clarity and resolution to the situation.  The rest is up to the Lord.

(P.S. I'm good at that kinda stuff.  I'll write it for you if you want).
When you're in love you don't want to fall asleep bc reality is finally better than your dreams.

Umm yeah cause I am slightly ticked. The Northwest is small and the groupof musicains even smaller so you know they stick together and thethought of my name being in that " cats youdont play for" list irritates me.

Seems you're clear to me too.

If you've proven to the "sub-contractors" that you paid, then it's on them to take him to court. You did your part by paying your contractor.

That's the legal, secular, part.

Now, the biblical thing to do is bring him before his friends. If that doesn't work, then you, and his friends, should take him to his pastor.

Wow, reading is fundamental.  I totally missed this part:

If I had not reached out to these guys from the band they would not have even known.  I sent them copies of the contract as well as the cashed check printouts and they were surprised and one even said " sorry man I usually do not talk to the artist but I'm glad I did cause I would not have known the whole story"

Sounds to me like you had already done what I suggested you did (minus the letter, which is moot, at this point).

Yeah, you can definitely let this one go.  Tell your ego and pride to saddown and shuddup.  You did your part.  Let the Lord do the rest.

This is just the beginnig my brotha. Anytime you are doing any type of work for God the devil is always present. The devils job is to try & destroy you by destroying your name, which he believes will destroy your message. So you must be doing something right. So Count it all joy. With that said, you have 2 checks that have been cashed,  & a signed contracted with an agreed amount, so i wouldn't even worry. Just move on & never use that brotha again.
