Groove clip... super clean and pocket tight
« on: July 12, 2009, 08:25:53 PM »
Hey guys,

I've been watching this clip for a while and wanted to share it.  Ed Motta is a vocal beast out of Brazil, and in this clip his group is TIGHT.  The start might throw you off with the James Brown'ish opening, but once the groove locks in these guys just ride with it.

I don't know who the bassist is, but I'm REALLY digging his work.  As with the entire group, he's strong in the pocket and not doing anything too heavy, yet they all lock in for a KILLER groove.  The fills are precise and seem to come off effortlessly... tasty without drawing attention away from the overall picture.  Simple, clean, smooth, and elegant.  I love it!

While I'm at it, here's a clip from one of my favorite groups (Incognito) live doing Who Needs Love (originally recorded with Ed Motta on the CD).  I love the bass line on this track, it has to be fun to play once you master it.

If you have time, look up some of their tracks... they always have GREAT basswork on their music.

That is a killer pocket right there. Right up my alley! Now if I could find musicians of the same caliber to play with..........

I've heard of Motta but never heard any of his music. Is it all in this same vein? I own everything Incognito ever put including bootlegs! They've had some killer bassists over the years!

I think Motta has covered a range of styles from what I've read, I haven't really had time to check into him further aside from a few youtube clips.

Incognito has always impressed me with the caliber of musicians and singers they bring in, and they always form a tight unit.  It's amazing that Bluey has kept that group going at that level for so long... and you can tell that they all enjoy what they're doing.

I didn't realize how amazing their bassists have been until it hit me one day and I started going back through their older stuff.  Jacob's Ladder... geez, I wish I had the skill and dexterity to play that track.

watching the video and something stands out right away: the lighting. i notice that most players look at their bass from time to time, some more often than others, and a lot more when playing more difficult parts.

could playing in dimly or poorly lighted places affect your playing and what you choose to play? if you lose yourself playing complicated stuff and cant get a good look to get yourself back on track, you would probably be more deliberate and mindful about what you choose to play. i know thats the case for me in those kinds of situations.

I already like that kind of groove. I have been an Incognito fan for at least 15 years, and now that I am learning to play bass I can really appreciate the bassist's contribution to the feel of the music. Great clips!!
Rest?, Rest when you're dead!!! Right now there's work to be done.
