my bass stinks
« on: August 12, 2009, 09:22:41 PM »
i play a fender jazz am deluxe. for some time i've noticed when i take my bass out of my case i can smell an odor. it smells like my old high school football locker. i know it's cause from my sweaty hands. I always thought it was just the strings, but tonite i'm changing my string. i smelled the fretboard and its still there. it's starting to get on my nerves now. What can i use to clean it and then some type of protection?  ?/?

gross.

;D ;D ;D

I had some stuff that I got in Korea. I can't remember what it was now, but it put a gloss on the bass and freshened it too...I guess. Anyway, once you clean it some, you can cut a piece off a car freshener and stick it in your case. I don't think they have the "new bass" scent though.

Are you using a lined hard case?  I had a situation years ago where the fuzzy (crushed velvet?) lining in my hard case was molding under the the surface, causing the case and the bass to be REAL funky.  And I don't mean that in a musical sense.   ;D

Try using a gig bag for a while and letting the case air out.  If the odor improves, you may have your answer.

Could it possibly be your strap?  If you've sweated on your strap, it could be holding some odor.

This has been the culprit for me in the past.  Wipe down the bass after playing and don't put the strap in the case, but let it air dry.  It's still gonna get a bit funky but not as bad.

I've gotten funky with my playing, but never "funky" in the sense of sweating to the point that my strap is wet.

Since the strap is on my shoulder. i've never had sweat on my strap either. it still smells like fine. the fret board was the problem and the murrays oil took care of that. i will just try to remember to wipe it down after playing

Sweet. So. Problem solved.

I like my fretboard(strings) to be slick anyway, so I buy some lube to put on it. I can't remember what it's called, but it's for bass and guitar strings. I have steels on my bass, so they like to get high-pitchy sometimes, and catch my hand slides. The lube helps stop that.

try a little vinegar wipe on your case and strap,(check on a small area 1 st) good odor eliminator that shouldn't  effect the finish.

In all honesty I have never heard of that problem. But being somewhat scientific, I would focus on the bass case and wonder where the heck it's been. Did you buy the bass brand new w/case? Another thing, I keep those moisture things (packets) that come w/some electrical things, in my case. They absorb moisture and a few of them provide a neutral kinda' smell.

Man, you guys must be wearing the full three piece to keep the strap dry!  lol

Those little silicon packs would absorb some moisture for sure.  Just have to refresh them periodically.

Guess a lot of that was back in the day playing outside in Fla.  lol
