Proper procedures dealing with churches
« on: July 18, 2009, 12:27:12 PM »
I would like all musicians' advice regarding my current situation. I play for a church that recently told me they would like me for two sundays. I left another job to take on their extra sunday. Now I've been told that they have another musician coming in for one of the services they just added me for. One peron said he thinks that it is that I am "too fancy" and they think they want a more old fashioned service on that Sunday. I can learn any style of music. I think I would like to leave before they decide they don't want me at all. What does this sound like to you?

I think you need to consider the sources.  Is the person who asked you to pick up another Sunday the same person who said that another musician will be coming?  Are either of those the same person who didn't like your playing style?

Which one of these people is the real authority figure?  Anybody else is just background noise.

I agree.  You should be dealing with the one who "hired" you.

There could be many explanations for this. However, trust and believe that there is more than one person trying to be the head here.

Ok..... if they had already asked you to do two sundays, then it seems they had already decided that they wanted you. Some other person (with a lot of pull) said "well what about" or " I think we should get...". This type of thing always seems to backfire on them. I've seen it to many times.
As for your style of playing... I have found that it's not about how well and what style you play all the time, but your character and integrity. Keep doing what you are supposed to do and watch how things change. Let them do what "they feel" is best and allow them to see the flaw.
