The end of the world for an organist!!

Does it ever feel like the end of the world when you mess up?

We just came out of our 1st Holy Convocation(It's actually our 12th, but due to a dispute, our bishop resigned, many of our churches left our jurisdiction, and we are now regrouping.)... Anyways, I was the organist for the convocation, and it was women's day. They had this super-long extensive program with like 500 soloists and choirs and stuff.

To make a long story short, someone requested that the [interim] bishop's wife sing a solo. I didn't know the song, so I didn't play... The bishop had to come down himself and get on the organ, and when he did, whole church clapped.

Anyways, I felt so embarrassed and bad afterwards, I didn't want to play anymore...

I may be alone on this one, but has anyone ever felt bad when they either messed up or couldn't play a song? I know it wasn't that serious, but to me, if felt like it was the end of the world.

So, was this the only incident of you not being able to play a song during the entire event? If someone decides to sing a solo, they shouldn't assume another musician will know the song. They should either bring their own musician or have a music track there.

I used to feel bad when I couldn't pick up someone, but not anymore. One day people are gonna learn that just because someone can play an instrument, that doesn't mean they can play and and everything known to man.

I think your over thinking this one man. You probably assume that because the audience clapped, it was because somebody better than you got on the organ, when that may not be the case at all.
Real musicians play in every key!!!

Yeah, they actually clapped because he is the new bishop, and a very high profile one at that(a national officer in C.O.G.I.C.). It was more of a "Go 'head bishop!! Play that thing!" applause. And I knew that, but I still felt inadequate, because I was already nervous, and the jurisdictional MoM had been nagging me to give the perfect performance during the convocation.

But still, I always feel that way when something like that happens, even when nobody else notices.

I wouldnt give ......I mean it wouldn't bother me. IMO you didnt mess up, you just didnt know the song.

What song was it btw?

And you need to pray that you will no longer be nervous when you play....thats not a good feeling.

I can't remember the song right now... when the bishop started playing, I realized that the chords were really simple and easy, but I couldn't figure out their placement in the song.

When following a soloist, I usually listen for familiar patterns, then I join in once I got it, but this song just kept going and going, and never seemed to resolve, for a lack of a better term.

But yeah, I know it wasn't that big of a deal, and I shouldn't have felt bad, but for some reason I did.

It is so true that most people believe that a good musician can play anything with anyone singing and in any key. I felt that way myself until I started to try to play and actually learned to play somewhat.  I was shocked one time when a VERY, I  mean VERY good musician told me that he didn't really like to be placed in a position where he had to play for someone he didn't know singing whatever in whatever key and in whatever manner they were able to sing.  I thought he was kidding or just being highbrow. I thought in my very heart that they, or others of the same ability could play anything for anybody. He always did it when asked.

The more I learned, the more I saw it.  That could be a problem, even for a good musician. 90% of the time it wouldn't be.  But who knows?  Who can tell?
Would a person wish he had tried? After it was done, would he wish he hadn't?  You can only do what you think best at the time.

Your level of skill must be high to even have been playing at this event. I believe that I would learn the song in question and move on. I wouldn't be caught on that song again.  Other than that, I wouldn't even look back.

here's part of the insanity of being a "good musician".In a split second, you should be able to play any song in any key in any tempo and, and, and and execute it PERFECTLY.!!!!!!!we need to get real, and forget this nonsense. All LORD asks is to give it your BEST shot at any given time.don't sweat it Ramar

Yea these situations are tricky. I am not a big fan of playing behind soloist i'm not familiar with. Even if they are singing something like i wont complain...doesnt mean you will always be able to follow. Some singers just run and run through the whole song which makes it hard to jump in. I decided that for me not playing is my best option if i cant follow. And if the singer is bad thats a plus, lol. But dont feel bad, we are human we dont know every song ever made, just stick to listening for those familiar patterns and jump in where you can...but dont sweat you had a major event so thats enough said about yout ablilty.
