Audacity ?
« on: September 16, 2009, 05:38:36 PM »
I'm thinking about downloading this software but I'd like some more info on it. It's free so cost isn't an issue. I just have been doing some reading and I don't know that much about recording but it seems as if it slows down music without changing pitch but you can also record to it. I believe someone here told me about it but I can't remember who. I'm really just looking to record my practicing and ideas. I'm not trying to release an album. Input and help would greaatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Audacity is a great software for basic recordings demos. It's built behind a very raw format so everything is runs smoothly.

You can slow it down without changing pitch, but it does cause a digitizing effect. The slower the worse it is.

For small recordings and things like that its great. It kind gives you what you put into it. It doesn't have the miracle editing plugins of other softwares but it's free it can't hurt to try.

I'm trying to figure out which plugins you're talking about, since Audacity will even accept VSTs.

Yes, I forgot about that. There are quite a few vst's that audacity will accept. Some of them won't load correctly, or will load but won't give you control of all the parameters, but most will work. There are a bunch of free vst's on the web.

IMO audacity is probably one of the best free recording software out. I don't think it has the editing capacity of pro tools type software but considering it's free I think its a gem.

Supposedly, they just released an update this month from the GSOC (Google Summer of Code). VST fixes were in there. This is for version 1.3.9.

The only problem I had with Audacity, was that I was using out-dated (5-6 year old) hardware, and when I tried to record long tracks, sometimes it'd slow the tracks down. I'm sure if that particular computer was faster and had more memory, it'd work fine.

The biggest thing that I don't like in 1.2 is how seeking worked during playback. With that said, I actually have 1.2.6 on both my desktop and laptop. I'm going to upgrade to 1.3.9 and see how that works out.

Here are some links to VSTs supported by Audacity. I haven't tested them all, so I don't know if some have issues, like 6SA stated.

What you're referring to is known as time compression.  Pretty much every DAW does it.  The drawback as said before is that can tax your computer if your RAM isn't big enough to handle it.  I'm just now getting into time compression as I'm still learning about all of the stuff my DAW can do even after all of these years.
When you've done your very best, do even better.

I just started messing around with audacity. I am recording through a Zoom B21U effects pedal. The software that came with the pedal was too difficult to use. Audacity works great for a novice like me. So far all I have done is layered a few tracks on top of one another, but there are many things I have yet to explore. Anyway it's free so try it.
Rest?, Rest when you're dead!!! Right now there's work to be done.

I just got a B21U.. still working it... Audacity is nice.. there is another one out called Reaper.. I haven't had the chance to really get into it.. but I do know that the discount license is $60 and it is a pretty full featured suite..

... Thanks in advance!

for what you are trying to do, I believe audacity will be perfect for you. Just take your time learning how to use it. It has a lot of buttons and you don't need to press all of them right away. Especially if you just want to record and then convert it to different formats.

Hey you can even make a ringtone out of some of your own licks!!! Not sure how good it will sound though. I might have to do that today  :D :D :D :D :D
