Rue, it's crazy that you're so self-conscious about that, because I swear I didn't notice this horrific skin you claim to have, lol.  But, with it being that important to you, I am very happy for your progress.  You'll have to list for us your regimen, because I'm looking to take better care of my skin, as well.  I was just going to go to Wal-Mart and see what they had, lol.  But I'm interested in seeing what you do.   Actually, not so much what you used, because you already gave us that, but where you buy it.  I have no clue.

Awww thanks, Nessa. I'll e-mail you my "before" pictures to jog your memory of how bad my skin is. LOL! But I'm also gonna e-mail a confidentiality agreement that threatens to sue you down to your socks if you ever show anyone that picture! :D

First and foremost, I have to say that my only regret is not doing this sooner. Not because it's working, but because DUHHHH it's God's way. The earth gave us a remedy for just about every ailment we have. Truth be told, we don't even have to buy laundry detergent or dishwashing liquid or other household cleaners. All this stuff can be made from natural ingredients (but I don't go that deep with it. :D I love Gain and Dawn too much). Anyway, I love the fact that I'm using what God provided to make myself healthier, skin included.

My products:

To cleanse, I use Dudu Osun Black Soap.  I buy mine from Amazon (I think I spend about $12 for 6 bars). I'm fortunate to live in a city where we have a few "hood" malls, and every hood mall sells African products, so I can buy it from one of our hood malls, but they are about $6/bar. And those malls are all pretty far from me. There are other black soaps (plenty of them), but this is the one I like best. If you don't have bad skin to start with, I would check out the Nubian Heritage soaps and see which one works best for your skin (dry, oily, combo, aging, etc.).

To tone, I use T.N. Dickinson's Witch Hazel (all natural). I get it from CVS or Drugstore.com if I'm already placing an order. It's about $3 or so, although you could get Equate from Walmart for less (and it's the exact same thing, tbh).

To moisturize, I use 100% unrefined, raw shea butter. I go to the hood store for it. I think I paid $6 or $8 for a 16 oz tub (and I am JUST running out this weekend after buying the tub in March and using it every single day, twice a day). It lasts a really long time. Shea butter is really tricky to buy - even if you buy it from a store and not online. There are far too many vendors out there that sell fake shea butter, or shea butter blends that they pretend is shea butter. Nubian Heritage is a good brand if you need a brand name, but the one I buy doesn't have a brand, as most of the raw, unrefined ones don't.

I also take 6 Herpanacine. It's basically a vitamin with lots of Vitamin A and Lysine, which promote healthy skin. It's pretty expensive, so honestly, I wouldn't bother if you don't have acne. I spend about $27 for a bottle of 200 capsules, and they last me about a month. I order from Drugstore.com.

And my weekly mask consists of: Bentonite clay, milk of magnesia, honey, crushed up aspirin, and tea tree oil. I LOVE IT! If you don't have acne, you can skip the aspirin. Aspirin is made of salicylic acid, which dries up acne. I also use the tea tree oil about once a week with my toner (just apply the witch hazel to the cotton pad, then add a drop or two of tt oil).

I get the clay and TT oil from Whole Foods, and everything else from Wal-Mart.

My regimen

- Wash morning and bedtime (with my hands, I never use a washcloth on my face), tone (with a cotton pad; once a week or so, I add TT oil to the witch hazel on my cotton pad), allow to dry naturally, apply shea butter (less is best)
- Take 3 Herpanacines with first meal, 3 with second meal.
- Drink at least 58 oz of water. I will be honest, I really slacked off on this over the summer. These days, I pretty much drink 1-2 bottles of water, which is about 20-40 oz.
- I'm also taking a probiotic for several reasons, acne being the least of them :-[ But this helps to regulate the digestive system so that you're more regularly ridding your body of toxins. Those things really do contribute to bad skin.

Note: it took me a long time to get used to the shea butter. When you have acneic skin, you habitually do everything you can to keep oil off of your face. I spent decades buying only oil-free products, so it took some mental reconditioning (and a lot of asking God if He's sure about this... lol) to apply an oil-based product to my face. But I read up a lot on it (I read up a lot on all this stuff, fwiw), and learned that the less you apply, the better. I have extremely oily skin, and amazingly, the shea butter actually completely eradicated that problem. I use about a kidney bean size, rub my hands together until it's completely dissolved and then apply it to my face. My face (for the first time since I was 12) has a matte look pretty much all day long.

About every 10 days, I get a chemical peel. This is to help keep the acne at bay, and it's supposed to help with the hyperpigmentation. Again, not something I'd recommend for someone with normal skin. Not worth the money. They are VERY expensive (and not fun).

About once a week, I do the mask.

Mask recipe
2 tbsp of Bentonite Clay
1.5 tbsp of Milk of Magnesia (if you don't have acne, you can use water)
6 crushed non-coated aspirins (if you don't have acne, you can skip this)
1 tsp of raw, cold-pressed honey
3-4 drops of tea tree oil

I start with the clay and aspirin then slowly blend in the MOM, then the honey. I stir until I make it a good clay consistency, then add in the tea tree oil. From what I've read, it's important to use plastic (bowl and mixing utensil) and not metal because that causes the clay to react adversely. I then apply the mask to my entire face very thickly except eyelids and lips, and lay down with a book or iPad for 20-30 minutes. It's a bad idea to try to talk or eat, and laughing is out of the question. If you relax, you will actually feel the clay pulling the "stuff" out of your skin, and it feels like a face massage. Very nice mask. Not a lot of fun to wash it off... lol... but your skin will feel so baby butt soft that it's worth it. (If you don't like the smell, you can add other essence oils - sold at Whole Foods. My sister hated the smell, but for me, TT oil does the trick).

Yeah, it's a lot. Those that have good skin and don't have to do all this stuff should stop what you're doing right now and give Him some PRAISE! :D

Wow, good stuff... thanks, Rue.  I think I'll try to shop for the stuff next week.  I've never been very good with taking care of my skin, so since I've had the urge to step it up, may as well do it right.

You're welcome! As I recall, you're blessed with GREAT skin! This is a good time to start taking care of it so it will continue to look great when you enter your 60s and 70s. From everything I've read about black skin and natural products, the fewer chemicals you use on your skin and the less sun you get, the longer it stays youthful and healthy looking. I'm just stuck on the thought that God's way has to be the best way, and natural/organic products are made from stuff that HE created, so it's gotta be good. :)

Anyway, here is a list of some really good soaps by Nubian Heritage, if anyone else is interested. They make all natural, organic products with no chemicals or stuff you can't identify or pronounce. There are other companies that make similar products, but NH is what I usually recommend because they have the best variety. (I love their Lemongrass & TT Oil Soap - it's great for oily skin). Here's one place you can buy them online. If you look up any of the ingredients, you can find out how they benefit your skin type and see which will be best for you.

African Black Soap
Raw Shea Butter w/ Frankincense & Myrrh (this one is only for saved people)
Coconut Oil & Papaya Soap
Mango Butter Soap
Lemongrass and Tea Tree Soap
Honey and Black Seed Soap
Lavender & Wildflowers Soap
Olive Butter & Green Tea Soap
Indian Hemp & Haitian Vetiver Soap
Goat's Milk & Chai Soap

Wow, RJ!  I keep thinking about that picture of that really skinny guy you used to have as your avatar a long time ago.  Milk does a body good, lol!

I praise God that I'm still on track (though I made a small detour yesterday, and went to Famous Dave's with a friend).  Even then, I found out that I was full a lot more quickly than ever before.

Also, I wore a dress jacket to church that I haven't worn in quite some time.  I was surprised at how loose it fit.  I thought maybe I just didn't remember this particular jacket and it's fit since I hadn't worn it in quite a while, but I got to church, and the minister of music was pulling on my jacket commenting on how loose it was.  Yeah... that's what it's about.  Definitely a great feeling...

Thanks bro.   :)

Yup.  I was pretty big and had to lose quite a bit of weight.  The last time I was skinny was about 10yrs ago.

Wow, I think I might try the mask thing, thanks Layla. Black soap broke me out, but I think it was the fragrance added to it. Plus I have some pimple scars that I really want to get rid of. I've tried several facial cleansers, but I realized it's for acne and I don't have acne, so it's burning my skin :-\. I just get like two or three bumps that are kinda big and drives me nuts because they'll pop out of nowhere lol. I even bought those "RX for Brown Skin" products, that aren't inexpensive at all, to tone my skin and it doesn't seem to be doing anything.

Then, I stumbled across this at Walgreens:

Out of Africa Organic Shea Butter Soap Complexion Bar with Milk Protein. I read reviews on my phone before buying it and thought I would give it a shot. I washed my face at night and the next day, I saw a difference in my face. The pretty big pimple I had was gone and my skin looked more toned and felt more moisturized than it had been in awhile. Online it was 7 bucks, but it was 3 buck at Walgreens :). I might purchase the Out of Africa Organic Shea Butter Black soap too, but for now I'll see how this works.

Dude. You posted a picture I guess it was back in like 2007 or 2008, and you were SKIN-TEE! I think it was you and your bishop in the pic? You were super-duper skinny. Need I locate said picture?

First of all, wow @ your memory.   :D

2nd of all, if I post a pic of myself in '07 or '08 and was I was skinny in it, it was an old pic.

Because in '07 and '08 I was FIZ-AT!   :D

Yeah, you looked mad young in it. And my memory awes me too. It's crazy how I don't remember anything from moment to moment, and often forget important stuff, but remember the most meaningless, trivial, insignificant stuff whether it's from yesterday or 20 years ago. It's just nuttery, I tell ya, nuttery!

You have gorgeous skin, girl! Very radiant. I think I told you that once before, I think it was the first time I saw a profile pic of you? Idk. Anyway, if you only get random pimples, it's probably related to something you're eating, digestion (not getting rid of waste), or something topical (like oils from your hair or from touching your face). Take a look at that next time you get them and consider what you've eaten.

For the acne scars, there are a lot of products that get rid of scarring. HOWEVER, the all natural/organic products take a very long time to lighten/clear the scars. I've been working on mine since March and though the progress is noticeable, the dark spots are still noticeable too. :D Because mine are so bad, I moved beyond the natural stuff to some other stuff that is working well (but I wouldn't recommend that route for just a few scars). My suggestion is to just be really patient. Shea butter does help with scars, but it takes a while.

I hope you enjoy the mask.
