Have you ever overcome a major fear by facing it head on?
Yes. It was the beginning of my confidence transformation. I was in high school. I had won the starting QB position, but still had a huge fear of failure. I knew I had the ability, but I got petrified once I hit the field. The first game of the season, on the first play from scrimmage, I was so nervous and scared that I fumbled the snap and my team lost the ball. My worst fear came to pass on the very first play of the game! I didn't want to go back to the bench. I just knew my coach was going to chew me out, and I knew my teammates were going to dog me. As I jogged back to the bench with my head hanging low, guys came up to me and encouraged me, and when I got to the bench my coach said, "Shake it off kid. You'll get 'em next time!"
The other team scored, and when we got the ball back, that fear returned. But, my teammates continued to encourage me and my coach called an option play. I believe the next few moments changed my life forever. I shook off the fear and was determined to make a good play. I got the snap, ran down the line, faked the pitch to the halfback and cut up the field. I broke two tackles and 60 yards later, I was in the end zone. From that point forward, I never allowed fear to paralyze me again.
We won the game, by the way.
