Very surprising...  especially for that to happen in just a short time into his term.  Questions are gonna come hard and fast from folks asking what he's done to deserve it.

I'm tempted to watch Fox News just for the comedy of haterism and venom they'll be spitting all day long on this.

Fo Real!  You know they will have something to say about this.  I see it like this, they didn't wait a long time into his term, before they started blaming and critizing him.  So why not reward him in a short time for what he has done, just as they critized in a short time for what he didn't do.

I'm kind of torn on this:

On one end I think it was great for him to get this honor because he has done a great job giving us a different tone across the world not as a superpower that thinks we're better than everyone but as a country that's willing to cooperate.

On the other end I feel like it puts Obama even in more of a heavy-duty situation because that raises the already high expectations. I feel like it might have been best given to him maybe mid 2010 or maybe before his 1st term ends.

Idk

I'm not sure how that's "hating" granted I skimmed the article.
But it's a serious question. The nominations were made two weeks into Obama's term.
So it seems he was nominated (and selected) based on potential.

But, to me, the Nobel prizes have always been something of a joke. A guy like Mohandas Gandhi never won one. Hitler and Stalin received nominations. Arafat won. Jimmy Carter won one but not Reagan. Gore won. Even in science Einstein won for his discovery of the photoelectric effect, but not for relativity.

IMHO, Gore and Carter both deserved theirs. I would certainly have to say that Gandhi should've gotten one. I mean, come on... he's GANDHI!!! I don't know much about Yassir Arafat, so I can't comment... I'll just say that I think those were all good picks.

IRT Obama, I can't front. I think it's a bit premature to be seriously based on his accomplishments; it's clearly based on his potential and efforts, which is a little different... but... I'm still happy for him. Dude rocks. *shrug*

Very shocked, yet pleased.  When I first heard the announcement my thoughts went from being proud right to waiting on the criticisms to come out.

And why does Michael Steele opinion even matter? The Tea Party folks wouldn't even allow him to speak at an event after he publicly expressed support for them.  I think he has bigger fish to fry and his own acceptance to worry about before President Obama.  Michael Steele would make a horrible detective because he just can't seem to get a clue.

Gore and Carter both deserved theirs.

Gore received his for global warming. If (man-made) global warming is real it can be justified.
Watch this video:

He begins speaking at about one minute mark and you really only need to see to about the 5 minute mark.

Just for fun...some quotes I have saved away (note the dates of the predictions):
Warming: Is our climate changing? The succession of temperate summers and open winters through several years, culminating last winter in the almost total failure of the ice crop throughout the valley of the Hudson, makes the question pertinent...- New York Times June 23, 1890

Cooling: The question is again being discussed whether recent and long-continued observations do not point to the advent of a second glacial period, when the countries now basking in the fostering warmth of a tropical sun will ultimately give way to the perennial frost and snow of the polar regions - New York Times - February 24, 1895

Cooling: “Fifth ice age is on the way…..Human race will have to fight for its existence against cold.” – Los Angles Times October 23, 1912

Warming: The Arctic ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot... - Washington Post 11/2/1922

Cooling: Scientist says Arctic ice will wipe out Canada, Professor Gregory of Yale University stated that “another world ice-epoch is due.” He was the American representative to the Pan-Pacific Science Congress and warned that North America would disappear as far south as the Great Lakes, and huge parts of Asia and Europe would be “wiped out.” – Chicago Tribune August 9, 1923

Warming: weather men have no doubt that the world at least for the time being is growing warmer.” – Time Magazine Jan. 2 1939

Cooling: After a week of discussions on the causes of climate change, an assembly of specialists from several continents seems to have reached unanimous agreement on only one point: it is getting colder. - New York Times - January 30, 1961

...One can literally go on in this fashion up to today. Yet, this is what we gave Gore a Nobel Prize for.

So... cnn.com has the usual articals, and commentaries linked discussing why he deserves it or why it might be a bit early.  Fair enough.

Now go to foxnews.com and you see nothing but takedowns.  And they have the nerve to have "Fair & Balanced" as their motto.  Riiiiiiiight.

And frankly, Steele is a joke.  Just like they tried to prop up Palin to be a "me too" after Hilary, they're propping this guy up.  At least he could make the best of that and make a good name for himself and his party, but he's been a complete clown.

This is an honor...

...but honestly when I first looked at the title of the thread the first question that ran through my mind was, "for what?"  I don't know the history of the Nobel Peace Prize winners so I can't say if it's unfair that he got picked based on potential.  Idk, it seems odd to me because everyone I know of (and it's limited) that won the prize based on what they did and not just what they said they were going to do.  (not saying Obama is all talk)
