Why is it that some people like to show off on the boards. I mean if you're good, you're good and I have no problem with that, but why be a show off?
I ask this because I just joined a few old friends in their group and this one board player just seems to be someone who wants to be seen and heard more than anything (plays louder then he should). Dude is good not a beast, but good. Now I have only been serious on my boards for about the last 2 years and feel no imtimidation as I have learnt a lot here and practicing, but am more of a humble laid back person. I thank God everyday for blessing me with the gift of music and work hard everyday to get better.
So why do some people just have to be show offs?

Yep, attention, and the fact that they are probably intimidated by other musicians so they feel a need to show-off. At least, that's how I like to think of it.

I guess you're both probably right. I'm comfortable about my playing and style, but don't feel I need the attention or am I going to worry about the next person's skills.

Now since I have been playing at my church I like to give the musicians a chance to, I don't wanna necessarily say show off, but a time to express themselves. Like when our lead guitar player is playing during a song that has a solo I will give it to him and it gets the audience encouraging the guitar player. I'm just big about everyone else getting attention and not really myself because at the end of the day as long as God is glorified in my playing that's all that matters.

I agree with this, but some people do like to show off when they aren't supposed to, and sadly that gets you fired/kicked out when you aren't supposed to be doing it.(Orchestral person here lol, just do boards for church)

I also think that some people play in such a manner that may seem like they are showing off, but thats just how they play. Look at people like John Peters or even Kim Burrel when she sings. Are thy showing off or is that just simply their style?

IDK thats a hard one, because I tend to not like the attitudes of either one. They both strike me as arrogant. But it is possible to play or sing like either one of them and be truly humble. Humility tends to fade with talent, IMO. Humble cats truly have a different spirit about them, and have the right perspective about their gifts. You can hear the difference in everything they do.

This arrogance we see is one of the reasons I question if I ever want to do professional work in gospel music or in music ministry.

I think Kim comes off as arrogant, but I've never seen John act in an arrogant manner.

There is no room for "show-off" mentality when it comes to glorifying the Lord in music. I don't mind a musician "feeling it" from time to time, if it "fits". But every chord doesn't need to be "fat" or have an 11th or a 13th added tp it.
I was at a program the other night and there was a young keyboard player that I had seen before. He was outstanding on the first 2 songs (probably originals). But when the group did "I'm Healed" by Donald Lawrence, you not have known the song if the singers weren't singing. Sometimes, less is more!

Show offs don't necessarily "suck", they're just annpying and are a serious challenge to the way the Holy Spirit is trying to move. We that are annointed and rooted can handle it though. In the end, you reap what you sew ...... Sela

I don't mean suck as in their skills, I meant the attitude part. That's what I mean by their good, cuz the skills are there. But, their attitudes suck.

Part of musicianship is discipline. Folks need to keep that in mind when they are putting themselves before the music.

because people think if you have chops youre going to get gigs and they want attention also. but the thing that gets me they cant play a simple song and you cant tell what they are singing until the choir sings!

Showing off = The right lick at the WRONG time!
BTW, is arrogance or a bad attitude discernable? And in what way is that discernment different from Hateration (envy on others' part)???

I don't know John Peters. But I do know Kim Burrell, and she is not an arrogant person. She knows what she can do, and she doesn't act like she doesn't know what she can do. But she's approachable, and she talks to people. I guess I don't know your particular interpretation of arrogant. I've also seen some arrogant people who didn't show off... and some show-offs who actually weren't arrogant... they just wanted people to know that they could play. But they didn't treat people bad. They'll talk to anybody... but they're going to try to show you their chops, but when they finish, they're going to be holding a conversation with you. Arrogance and "right-lick-wrong-time" people are not necessarily the same. And I would have to agree that arrogance is an extension of self-doubt or inadequacy.
