SWR SM500 head..
« on: October 28, 2009, 07:06:30 AM »

Does anyone here have this head? I am looking around for a new amp.. and I didn't want to do it piecemeal.. I figured Id try to get something good now and not have to worry anymore. I was initially looking at getting a 210 combo amp tat could run a 15" cab which I would get later and call it a day.. I figured that way I would be able to have enough flexibility of just about any kind of situation.. Originally I was looking at a GK or a Fender.. but the other day I was drawn to a local pawnshop and what did I see but a SM500 head.. with a 210 cab.. and a 15 cab.. and the whole thing going for 1G. Now I could put this on layaway probably as these folks know me.. and I am already saving for a new amp.. I just hadn't planned on spending that much right off.. but the configuration was exactly what I was looking for and from what i have read about the head it is a decent head.. but I am wondering if anyone here uses either that setup (210+15) or has that head.. What do you guys think?

I'd say go for it. It's a pawnshop layaway which means you can take your time provided you have something to get you by.

I have that set up in SWR workingman 2x10t and a 2x15t great great set up. it is plenty of highs and i can add all the mids i want. nice setup.

I am assuming the cabs you are looking at is workingpro?

I've got the SM900. pretty much the same just more watts. I love it. I sold my Eden WT800 to buy it. I played through Terrence Palmer's SM900 a few years ago and I went out and got one of my own asap. Best swap I've ever made (and I like Eden alot) but the SM900 or SM500 sounds a lot cleaner and more natural with high-end basses like my Smith and Pavel etc. I still use 2 Eden 4x10 cabs with it. great combo.

Would love to hear what that combo sounds like, perhaps in a video, with a phat groove associated with it?   Roll Eyes

Well I held off on the setup.. I wound up getting some money tied up in a local store.. I had decided to scale back a bit because my daughter's car went under.. So I got a used  GK BL210 with the idea of getting a 15" cab later.. but I didnt like the sound of this one once I got it out of the store.. so I returned it.. and I must have been having a major DA (dumb @)moment because this store has a no cash/store credit only return policy.. So now I have to try to get a sideways deal on something else.. I have found a used Schroeder 1212L cab for $550.. So I am going to get that and maybe add a MkB Traveller 210 down the line.. depending on how it all sounds with just the 1212. Still looking for a decent amp though.. which will be hinging on what I can get from this local store.. that will never see business from me again after all this is over ........

The schroeder might not need a parntering cab. If you are putting enough watts to it. I betcha you will only need that one cab.

+1!!

I had a schroeder 1210r and let me tell you this.  That puppy was LOUUUUDDDD.  As loud as my GK410.  THe thing you'll find wit hthe schroeder folded cabs is that you don't get to much low end with them.  The 1212 is suppose to have a little more bass than the 1210, but I don't know if it'd be enough.

THe ONLY way I could see a reason to get another cab with the 1212 is if you aren't getting enough low end, and in that case I would add a single 15 and not a 210.

Been thinking about a Schroeder 21012. My plan was to get something like a Agulier GS 112 and than get 2 of them. Well for a bit more I can get a Schroeder.

I was close to pulling the trigger on a 21012, however the weight just didn't work for me at all.  To small of a package to weigh so much.  It definitely has the lows that the 1212 and 1210 are missing though

I was looking at the 21012 as well.. the older one was 56lbs & 23.5Hx23.5Wx16D @$1275 + $60 Shipping .. and that was the Light model.. the regular one was 80lbs That was a show stopper for me..  I am trying to get lighter.. The new one however is 48lbs & 23.5Hx23.5Wx16D.. Another reason why I backed off from the SM 500 was even though it was a good price.. (I could have bought the whole rig amp & both cabs for $1100 and sold the cabs.. but I didn't want to deal with all that)so after the fiasco with the local music store which has been resolved.. I am getting a SWR Working Pro 400 head.. and the 1212L is on the way.. I decided on the SWR after looking at Fender & Kustom & Hartke (I had to get something that this store either sold or could get.. since the Fender tB-600 was out of my pricerange.. and Fender owns SWR... Wink The Kustom stuff looked good on paper..but it was kind of pricey too.. and I just didn't want to get the Hartke. I have a history with SWR so... )I should have the amp by Monday at the latest.. and the cab will probably get here by Tues or Wed. I still wound up spending around the same money.. but at least I have a warranty on my new head.. and a 42lb cab to tote.. as opposed to a 60lb 210 & a 55lb15 cab.. I'll let you know how it all sounds.. I am thinking of taking it to the church when I get it all and firing it up in the sanctuary when no one is there.. Just to see how it will shake out.. but I am getting a good feeling about this setup.. I was going to get the 700.. for the extra headroom.. but i didn't really have the cash to drop.. still got a car to get fixed.

Don't sleep on the aggie GS112's lol....they're loud as well!  I've been gigging with 2 GS112's for a while now and they are nothing to sneeze at (unless you're used to going through an 810 lol).
They've been loud enough for 80% of the gigs I play but I'm experimenting with going to a 2-2x10 set up for portability sake (I miss the punch of 10's sometimes).

To the guy thinking about buying the SM-500, its a great deal for a stack but i just dont like SWR amplifiers ever since i bought my Eden WT-550.(which sounds great) My church has one and a Goliath III 4x10 cab. Every SWR amp ive ever played though makes my basses sound horrible. the EQ on it does little to nothing to shape your tone. i have a GK MB2-500 that i put right on top of the SM every sunday that blows it out of the water!!!! in a nutshell, it just overcolors my tone. sounds alright for synth keybass though. but different strokes for different folks.
