There's a surprise inside
« on: October 28, 2009, 03:51:37 AM »
Dwayne Wright doing it in UK

Whats good LGM. I've come to the conclusion that not only is DW an utter fool...lol...but I also think is he's one of the best bass players alive. YES I SAID IT!!!

I been listening to DW alot along with Justin Rains, and Tim Rawbiz...Just a few of the favs...I'm trying to figure out where these guys get it from. Especially as far as soloing is concerned. These guys can sit there and pull out riffs all day and no two are the same...Where does it come from?!?! Do these guys study theory? Is there some musical steroid that I'm unaware of that their taking? Please somebody help a brotha out. It is my lifelong dream to play like these cats, so if someone has the secret...please be so kind as to share it...lol

God given talent. Some people just have it. Not everybody will play like Kobe bryant. He has a talent that he was made for. Same thing for bass players. Not to take any inspiration from you, but these guys are the real deal because God gave them that talent. God did not grant everybody that level of talent.

While I do agree that some people have a more natural ability to do certain things than others, I believe with some hard work and dedication to your craft, you can develop those same talents and abilities.  You might have to work harder and longer than the next guy in order to reach the same level.

Since you made the Kobe analogy, I'll make a different one.  Think about Tim Duncan (considered by some to be the best PF to play the game).  He doesn't have any great atheletic ability.  He doesn't run fast, jump high, no flashy dunks or anything like that.  What he has is great fundamentals and great basketball IQ.  Kobe also has a great Basketball IQ.  There are guys who are just as atheletic and talented as Kobe but, don't know how to make good decisions and don't have the drive that Kobe has.

Most of the players that we admire have great music concepts.  That's why it's hard to learn their styles because it's more about concepts than about a particular technique.  They hear things a certain way, that's why they play a certain way.  You want to go to another level, you have to learn to be a musician who plays bass and not just a bass player.  I've seen plenty of musicians who had to work hard to be that good.  There really aren't that many vituosos.

Two verses come to mind:

"Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things." Matthew 25:21

Whatever God gives you in the way of talent, be a good steward of it, use it for His glory, and He will bless you and add to it.

"For unto whomsoever is given, of him shall be much required." Luke 12:48

Those whom God has blessed with extraordinary ability, He expects that they will use what He gave them in extraordinary ways.

Well these guys are indeed blessed but i feel like you cant just sit in a hole and wait for god to make you a virtuoso.  Tim Rawbiz and Justin Raines attended Berklee.  DW comes from a musical family

Also most of these guys have good connections with other great bass players. Im pretty sure DW was hanging around Reggie Young when he played with his father plus his father was a talented organist.  I read somewhere that Tim Rawbiz godfather is Andrew Gouche.

I think it's being around better musicians then those guys would go home and practice for hours. Some of it is in ability and talent though.
Vision without action is just day dreaming. I miss practicing.
