Well, here's the deal. I can't count how many business ventures I've been apart of from the ground up that haven't gone anywhere! From restaurants to hot dog stands to real estate, I've had my fair share of failures.
I've decided to utilize what's right in front of me. I have amazing song writers (some real serious undiscovered talent), incredible musicians from all across the board as far as genres, extremely business savy brothers who would give me an arm if I lost mine, some capital, serious connections, and a small home studio that is being built. I want to own a company that produces artists. I don't even know the proper term. Would it be a production company? I believe all the puzzle pieces are there with the exception of knowledge of what a successful music business looks like and how it operates.
I would love some insight from you cats that are on the battle field. I believe I have a market niche that would be foolish not run with which is that fact that I'm surrounded with the right people to make something special happen. I have an incredible team of guys who are rock solid believers, friends, business owners, musicians, and amazing song writers.
Problem is I don't even know where to start. How does one become a successful producer? What does it take? We will specialize in Rock, Country, Folk, Blues and R&B. I know these are broad questions so any insight you have to offer would be great. Any links would be awesome. Thanks in advanced.

A production company is indeed what you're starting. Having the talent and equipment is essential, but I would suggest taking some time to learn the business first. Two books I always recommend are Everything You'd Better Know About The Record Industry by Kashif, and This Business of Music by Donald J. Passman. They are very informative. Do not venture into the business side of this without knowing the business. Business FIRST!
In this day and age, being an independent artist, producer, or label owner is so much easier with the ability to self-promote via the internet. Get the music done, get it out there on Myspace, Facebook, YouTube, etc, and when people hear your work, they will come calling or you can parlay it into your on label and keep it all in-house with producers, writers, and talent.
A friend of mine did a CD on a small independent label in 1999, and a then up-and-coming artist heard his writing and production on that CD and literally came here looking for him and met him at his church and she is now a Grammy Award-winning artist and he has Grammys as well, and has assembled quite a resume. The same thing could go down for you and your crew. Go for it, and I wish you the best of luck. God bless you.
I'm in the same pursuit as a producer and composer, and things are looking up. Not there yet, but they're looking up. Get those books man. I have had the Kashif book for about 9 years now and it is literally right beside my bed. I refer to it quite often.

I would also recommend a book called "Music Law: How To Run Your Band's Business". It's a good tool for learning about contracts and agreements. It's really informative. also, try to contact some other producers that wouldn't mind sharing knowledge and contacts with you.
