I need help?
« on: October 30, 2009, 05:32:27 AM »

What's going on fellas'

My problem is that i know a lot of technique and styles of rock guitarist like Hendrix and such but i don't know how to transfer that to Gospel. For example, as we all know in today's Gospel it's all about the Keyboard, and maybe Bass. I play at a church where there's two guitarist. A lot of time i don't know what to do. They'll say something like one play rhythm and the other play lead. Yet, there style of rhythm play is totally different from Pete Towshend, and Malcolm Young. It's too the point where i don't know what to do. Sometimes i may get a rhythm going but only to feel like it's boring.

If anyone knows of any tutorials, or has any advice. I'm all ears.

It is posts like these that make me so grateful my church loves CCM music where its ALL about the guitar baby.  Cool

On the few occasions we do gospel songs, i either sit them out or i play some bluesy licks here and there...in between the vocals of course.

I'd say listen to a lot of gospel CDs and try and analyze what the guitarist is doing. Most times the sound is really hidden but you can kind of pick out what he is doing.

Other than this, i can offer you no help.

Listen to a lot of Cornell Dupree and Curtis Mayfield, and it will give you some ideas for what to play.

I'm sort of in the same situation with my uncles quartet group. At my church we play alot of newer p&w songs that require lots of rock licks and solos. Ive been there about a year now and have gotten used to playing only pocket riffs and lead parts. With my uncle's group I'll have to play more chords because an older fella wants to play the "old school" lead licks that fits their music. So now I have to reveiw the chord theory to freshen up on my chord melody. If you're not a fan of You Tube it can be helpful.

Curtis Mayfield?

One of my favorite guitar players, and huge influence on Hendrix.

Curtis Mayfield?
When I finally got an electric I looked to Curtis Mayfield as one of my influences.

Well. I don't have to much musical experience but their is one thing that is helpful. You can (a) ask them what you want to play exactaly, (b) copy what someone else is doing, or (c) experiment to see if you can come up with a good riff to play at some part in the song.

With me A was pretty straight forward; just continue doing what i was doing before.

B was really cool cause something that may sound cool on another instrument or even a different setup sounded better on the guitar. On some of the songs that we played wednesday nights i would just copy some cool riff or lick that the pianist had played and he looked at me like "dude you are a blessing. Now play just keep doing that and we're good." Even the same lick, on the same instrument, but with a different sound or rhythm may get you some points.

C is a little difficult. Just do some improv and look at everybody else. If the others look at you with wide eyes and a look of aw going "Dude that was awesome" then you're prolly headed down the right path. If the others look at you like you are hiding a dying cat or something and are slowly muting your instrument at the mixer panel then my best guess would be to stop what you are doing and try something else.

Just keep trying different things basically.
