Stumbling Block
« on: October 26, 2009, 07:07:09 AM »

Alright guys.....As you know I'm the newbie, and I'm needing some practicing tips. I'm working on technique, scales, chord progressions, arppeggios, and such. Now what I'm stuck on is how do I actually apply this??? I work on it everyday, some now I'm like, how do I fit this in?? How do I create bass runs and fills, using what I practice??

Something I read in a jazz book years ago: imitate-assimilate-innovate. Imitate: in other words, steal liberally. You've probably done this in your drumming. Pick a song or riff that catches your ear. Slow it down and learn it exactly.  Assimilate: analyze it and understand it (is it part of a scale-an arpeggio-a mode? what are they doing rhythmically, what register on the bass, vibrato etc). Innovate: once you have command of something you can use it at your discretion any time you want. Just like you can tell a closed from an open hi-hat and the sounds of different toms you'll start to see and hear all the things you are practicing appearing in the music you listen to. At that point you can play (create) whatever you hear or feel at the time. Hope this helps.

Cool that did help. One thing I haven't been doing is playing with music yet (jst praise & worship to where I just play the foundation). Great idea though!!! Anymore ideas or tips guys???

Take those ideas that you hear or steal and incorporate them into the praise and worship songs you are learning/playing.

I am stuck in the same rut. I am becoming much more proficient at the basics, but not much more creative.

This is the biggest 'secret' to bass playing period. It seems simple but it takes time, work, and dedication to achieve the bass lines you hear in your head. Have fun and don't forget your ABC'S!

Well...I actually did better yesterday during my practice session. I was mastering "Let it rise" William Murphy's version, and I came up with about three creative fills using my own brain power. I compared the structures of my ideas and matched them with the proper category (I.e. scale, arrpeggio, etc.) And basically dug em out the notes, and it was fairly simple, also learned incorporating hammer on into my fills and runs. Man.....I'm loving the bass more and more, thanks peeps for your help.

musicmandan I like you answer.  It actually validated what I was doing in my bass playing struggles.
