An alternative to GAS
« on: January 14, 2010, 09:50:02 AM »

Hi LGM Fam,

This is a very interesting read I stumbled upon while browsing TB:

http://www.basssessions.com/oct07/Randall.html

I'm not there, but I thought I'd share it FWIW.

Enjoy and blessings.

Thanks for sharing that article! I can admit that I am guilty of signs 2-5. Fortunately, I di exactly what he suggested: I cut back my collection and invested in recording software. My setup:

Duocore Laptop running Reason 4, and Ableton Live Intro
Behringer Mixer and Tascam 8 Track recorder

As a result, I practice more, I play more and I am collaborating on a couple of projects. Most importantly, I stay out of Guitar Center now. I am in year 2 of a committed relationship with my J-Bass!

There is no cure for GAS.  The best we can do is to help you manage your condition so that you can live out the rest of your days in reasonable comfort.

I notice that most guys have some sort of GAS. I work with guys that spend thousands of dollars on hunting guns and rifles, golf gear, racing cars, custom motorcyles, wrist watches, tattoos and the list goes on.

Whatever you're into; do it in moderation.

Have you seen the video demo for Propellerheads Record.  Looks like a good compliment to Reason.  It has unlimited tracks.  I'm thinking about getting it just for the built-in Line 6 bass and guitar modules.

Yea, wrist watches. A guy at work told me about buying watches from Shop NBC so I checked it out. Shop NBC will have people calling in talking about the watches they own. One guy bought 60 watches in 3 months time; another guy has over 200 watches in his collection. They guy at work paid over $7,000 for a watch.
The host on one of the watch programs ,Jim Skelton, started a website called watchgeeks. If you check out the site, you'll see that some of these fanatics give a new meaning to the term GAS.

No, no. I should have been clearer in my response. I AM a watch fanatic! Not to the extent of some of those you described in your post, but....

mjl422, I have checked out Propellerhead Record and I am seriously gassing! Just about when I was going to trade in some equipment and, if necessary, sell some blood, Ableton gave all their registered users a free upgrade, which included ReWire support. G.A.S. attack averted! For now, I use Ableton for audio, but if the right opportunity comes along, I will be getting Record!

Guitar Center employee: "Sir, you are not allowed to bring that stuff in here. Im gonna have to call security!" lol.

Not bass GASsing at all...well maybe a Bart or Aguilar pre, but thats not technically GASsing right? its "maintenance and upkeep of previously obtained musical investment"...yeah, thats what it is.

But truly GASsing for better arranging skills so i can finish my project, and a Yamaha Motif XS7. lol

Interesting.. according to that article my gas is not as bad as I thought... and I am more in line with the solution/controls than I initially thought as well. AS far as solutions go I am pretty much right there...

Like mostly everyone else, I see different basses, amps, cabs, that I wouldn't mind having. But my current equipment (3 basses, 1 combo amp, 1 head & cab) more than meets my playing needs so I will stand fast for now. What's on my wish list? A Shuttle 6.0, a 2x10 cab, a Sadowsky fretless Jazz 4!
