My Pastor recently had to go back to 1 service per Sunday because he felt that the church was becoming divided with an 8:00 and 11:00 service. He is real big on us being a "family". What's you take on this?

We have multiple services at our church... We have a small church building with 200 plus members... So we have multilples services to accomidate the members... also it is for the saints who work Sunday Afternoons... They come for the 10:00a service and then go to work...
Plus the majority of people who attend the 10:00am service will stay for the 12:30p service...
It doesn't divide the church... only if that's what people are allowing to happen... The congregation has to be on one accord with the vision he has given the pastor...

I really think that a church needs two services on a Sunday... i am UPC and i happen to know that some of the best services happen at night. I think that the morning service should be like the teaching service if you will and like that night just all shoutin' service!
I also think that it is very important for a church to unite and be like a big family. Church growth, in my opinion, comes a little bit through church unity.
Well that is my input!

Our situation is similar to Nakia's.
We have over 6000 members. Our sanctuary only holds 1300 (we are seeking to build a larger sanctuary). We have 3 services per Sunday and then one on Wednesday. We must have multiple services to accomodate the people. However, even with such a large membership and multiple services, our church has not lost that sense of FAMILY.
That's because have many ministries, Bible Study groups, events, conferences, etc. for the members to become involved. It is there where you connect with other members, not just on Sunday morning. Usually, at any church those who feel like they are part of a family are those who are involved.

Well, me being in the place I am, I think multiple services is pointless cuz you just doing the same thing all over again. You have the same few people showing up, and those same few is what's carrying the church. It can really tire out the faithful members and everybody needs a break. One service is enough, just record it on cassete/CD or videotape it for the people who miss it. It's probably different for some other people on this site, but this has been my experience with multiple church services. Just my opinion, please don't bash me!!!

I agree. We have a similar situation at our church. We have about 300 members and many many visitors every Sunday. Our 11:00 service is almost always packed out, and our early service is not far behind. We are seeking to build our own sanctuary very soon so that we can accomodate more worshippers. I agree with Nakia, it only divides if that is what is allowed to happen. We also have many people who attend both services.

depends on the size.. big church not many faithful folks or big church not enough room, just depends. Some days i want to come early so i can go home or maybe visit another church so that option is nice to have.

I know this is like vintage.....lol!
But our church has 2 services now every Sunday. It can be stressful at times having to get up pretty early. Our pastor usually preaches the same sermon, which I don't have a problem with and we ususally sing the same songs unless something changes. Sometimes the invitational song my switch depending on lead of the spirit.
We still have more people at our 10:45 service than our 8:45 service. Our 8:45 service last until 10 and our 10:45 usually last till about 12:45 or 1.

We have 2 services, an 11:00 and a 6 p.m. Most of the time the 6 pm service is sparsely attended, depending on whats going on. I don't think it causes division

I personally think the multiple church services can be a good thing for church. Instead of just trying to build bigger churches, maybe you should try to use the space you have more efficiently.

We have 3 services 8-10, 11-1 & 6:30-8:00P on Sundays.. From early July to Early September the Sunday evening services stop.. Our 2nd service on Sunday is usually packed... the first one is decent... Mainly folks who do both are either involved in some aspect of ministry.. Sunday school is from 10-11.

I think it depends on membership. If your services are to accommodate large crowds because your sanctuary cannot hold all of the members at one time then I don't think it divides the congregation, it just accommodates the congregation. If you have a small church with just a few faithful members coming to the services then it can be tiring and repetitive.

I believe so. At my mother's church(also my former church) they have a "traditional blended" service at 11:00am, and then have a "contemporary" service at 1:00pm to cater to the college and teenage demographic. It only goes on during the school year. Why separate it like that? Why can't everyone worship together? Those who can't worship unless it's done "their way" aren't trying to receive the Word IMO. It's just whack to me.
