Public Transportation
« on: November 07, 2009, 09:16:22 AM »

I'm just curious if there is a public transportation system in the area that you live in. In the area that I live in we do not have a public transportation system and all of the businesses is moving to the west side of town which is causes the citizens of the east part with no transportation to suffer with a lack of resources.

Yesterday working at the agency a woman walked all the way from one city (Graham NC) to the agency I"m working at (East Burlington-about 10 or so minutes a part) for food and we were just about to close.

Yup, NJ Transit.

Speaking of public trans, SEPTA in Philly is on strike...again.  Hopefully It will be over soon.  People are really feeling the impact of this strike, Philly residents and visitors.

We have one, but it is not very good, and they are steady cutting back due to budget issues.  Where I'm from in Utah, the transit system was pretty good, I drove bus for UTA for a few years in my early twenties.

No public transpo in Detroit. (surprise, surprise) This has been a hot button issue here for past 40+ years.  I remember being very young and hearing the arguments from the suburban leaders and constituents vehemently opposing it because they didn't want Detroiters to have quick and easy transportation in and out of their neighborhoods.  They even fought against a unified bus system.  The city of Detroit has always had their own bus system. Then there is SEMCOG bus system for areas outside of Detroit.  In the boom years of the 80's, the northern suburbs had an explosion of businesses and many businesses had trouble getting and keeping employees due to lack of transportation for low wage positions.  This and the general disinclination to hire anyone from Detroit in the first place during those years is one of many factors that saw Detroit actually getting poorer while neighboring Oakland County was one of the most affluent in the nation, but don't get me started on this subject.  Smiley

Long Island and NYC has a great public transportation, though busses, trains and subways. Without it we'd be in trouble. Most of the black and hispanic hoods also heavily rely on taxi cabs.

This.

That (althought I would have to drive about 15 miles from my house to get to the closest Metrorail station).

Both Atlanta and Montgomery have public transportation systems, although as you would expect, Atlanta's is much better.

Of course, NY is by far the best of all. DC's is nice as well, but it's not as convenient as NY's. Atlanta doesn't come close to either one of these, except for the fact that it's ten times cleaner.

Speaking of Atlanta's public transportation system (MARTA):

Driver Forces Passengers To Pray On MARTA Bus

ATLANTA -- A MARTA bus driver is on suspension following allegations that he forced passengers to pray before allowing them to exit the bus.

Christopher James was one of those passengers. James said, initially, he thought something was wrong when he rang the bell to get off the bus and the door didn?t open.

James said the bus driver asked him and three other passengers to join hands in prayer. James said the driver prayed with the group for about four minutes.

?He got up out of the driver?s seat,? said James.

James, who isn?t against prayer, said he felt compelled to join in although the request confused him.

James? cousin, who arrived at the bus stop to meet him, said she saw the men standing inside the bus, but didn?t realize they were praying.

?I was like, ?Why were y?all praying on the bus? He said the man would not let them off the bus,?? said Thembi Cresser.

A MARTA representative told Channel 2 Action News reporter Tom Jones that the transit agency suspended the bus driver, identified as Leroy Matthews, for five days and told him not to proselytize to passengers. Matthews has been with MARTA for six years.

James said Matthews returned to his normal duties after the prayer.

?I don't want to pray to get off MARTA, you know,? said James.

LOL @ praying to get off MARTA.  I wonder what it was about... did the Lord lead him to do it?  If it was the leading of the Lord, I definitely wouldn't be apologetic at all.  If not, he's weird, lol.

That story had (still HAS) me so baffled... lol.  The visual is just so weird.  Undecided Cheesy Cheesy Undecided

I'm wondering if he had done that more than once. I'm wondering if anyone refused, and if so, whether he let them off. It's just so weird.

I would've refused too. Even if he was praying to God. I just don't like having my rights infringed upon. That's too much.

We have RTS down here in Florida and it is pretty good.  They extended the hours and also accomodate students who party until late night.
