I heard your pastor (is he still your pastor?) via podcast and really enjoyed him. I think the podcast was outdated, so I don't know if I'll catch anymore from him, but I enjoyed that.

Those types of sermons are for those that came to be entertained.
Co-sign. There is no depth to that type of sermon ......for entertainment purposes only

The ones I hate are the song preachers:
"Amazing Grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me, because I got over, how did I get over, my soul looked back and wondered!! Honey, it was by Holiness and Righteousness, those are the keys to the kingdom. I'll go with him through the valley, wherever he leads me I will follow, WHY, because its just something about singing for Jesus that makes me feel good good good. He's good because he lives in me, you ask me how I know he lives, he lives within my heart, LOVE lifted me saints, when nothing else would help, love lifted me!"
Take away a because and a couple of and's, the preacher just got lines of songs! And I could name 1 person that most of yall know, that does this every time I hear them, but I won't divulge that information!

Question for yall: Am I the only one who doesent like when preachers/evangelists etc preach entire sermons reciting cliche phrases, and does not really teach anything? I mean at least have a clear message and talk about salvation for those who may not be saved. How you gonna have an alter call on a Sunday Mornin' when you didnt even mention Jesus??? ......Maybe I've been spoiled by good preaching....
You are not the only one... I don't even like a lot of the posturing and shouting.. I mean if there is a message with it I can tolerate it to a point... but I have heard preachers who sometimes seem to be hollerin .... just to holler... and then someone will say.. "Ohhhh that man can preach.." and I'm like... (You almost want to say... "Look.. don't be screamin at me " I recently heard a preacher who O-R'd. He "over rhymed". It was the death of his message. The people in the congregation was not on board with him, but he kept doing it. It was so obvious that we was trying to get a reaction from his audience. He did every cliche, rhyme, and even pulled out a few songs. He really didn't deal with the text. I called him the suicide preacher because he killed himself with all of that "entertainment'.
When I want entertainment.. I'll hit the Redbox.. when I come to church I want to be fed. It's sort of like going to Outback and waiting for an hour.. for some pie. I don't mind 'em. Sometimes a brother just needs somee sleep in church. Boy .. uhhh you need J J J Jesus..

At the same time everyone is not going to perceive it as entertainment. Some perceive as part of the worship experience...you know?

Yes you are right... I guess in that respect diversity of styles is good... I have been in services that were almost somber... and others that seemed more like a party.. but GOD was there in both so I know what you mean.

But at the end of the day the big picture should be souls. One of the things that frustrates me about church sometimes is how the focus is not on souls but on getting the people hype. It's fine to get people engaged. In fact if you go to public speaking workshops in secular they will tell you that it's about engaging the audience. But my problem is that at the end of the day it should all lead back to saving souls. When it's all said and done, people have their preference and are not going to give up on what they prefer. So I guess the only thing is to let people go with their preference, God be glorified, souls saved and that's it. Then again that doesn't seem right if you believe that God is a God of order.....hmmmm.....idk.

Yes, I am still over there with the new Bishop. LOL! I have not backslidden to Baptistism. You heard the famous message about him taking his kids to the movies even though it's supposedly a COGIC no-no? That was hillarious (and bold). But that's Pastor....24/7/365

I think the song sermons are SUPPOSED to be. I think. It's the only justification I can think of for giving preachers a hymnal at an ordination service.
Anybody have another idea as to why that is done? I could never get anything except "so you can quote hymns relentlessly in your sermons and have all the words". Ugh!
