I'm looking to add some effects pedals to my arsenal at the moemnt specifically to achieve the "soft rock" guitar sound, we hear on many gospel solos and riffs (i.e. Byron Cage, Donald Lawrence and such). Now I'm not looking to melt any faces but I want that nice tone and pitch to get the job done. I evnetually would like to get a multi-effects pedal board but until then I'll settle for pedals. I currently have a Boss Blues pedal and a Cry Baby Wah. I am looking into to this becasue many gospel songs as you know often have this sound on little fills and riffs. So the question is:
1.) What type of effect pedal will achieve this sound? (I assume a distortion pedal of some sort or possibly a combination of sort)
2.) Which brand is recommended? $60 -$80.
Just as an FYI, I play out of a Fender Princeton 65 Amp (Solid State) in a 300-500 seat church with a Balcony. I also play directly out of the amp with no mic. I'm sharing all of this to give you all an idea of what I'm working with and volume control.

That's actually the one I mean to post...didn't even realize that it was the J&H v1. You can get the Hyde ( Son of Hyde) as a separate pedal and use your Blues Driver (is that what you are referring to as "Boss Blues pedal"?) for lighter overdrive sounds (not to mention that there are a number of mods that exist for the BD-2). |

Agree on the visual sound stuff. Great company, great people behind it.
However, If you must make budget, I am completely stoked with my Dano Transparent overdrive. It was like $50. They also have the silver overdrive (can't remember the name) which is allegedly a rip on the OCD, so it's worth a spin as well, I'd say.
The Jekyll and Hyde is 2 pedals, though, so the 150 price tag is actually very reasonable.

i couldn't dial the jekyll and hyde in to what i was looking for. don't know if it was the single coil on the tele or what. at any rate ive gone back to two pedals... upstart company PeebSounds' OD pedal, the Boggy BBQ Flood Water (patent pending) and the EH Metal Muff. of course, im only joking with the name of the OD, but ya'll know it's Jay's.
i tell you what tho, that metal muff has gotten me veeery close to what I want out of a lead distortion, and thats just with the tele. I imagine if i put a humbucker on that thing it'll wail even more. it saturates very nicely with the top boost on, but you do have to play under control as everything causes extra noise.
if anyone wants to buy a used jekyll n hyde, pm me. the AC power jack on the pedal doesn't work, but it works fine with batteries. i called Visual Sounds, and they said send it in and they'll fix it for free. it's also got a few scratches from use and transporting, but it works fine sonically. soooo, there'll be a nice discount as a result...like half or more off.

LOL, BB. I actually went with TXBBQ on the one that went to the store. Didn't feel like fighting with the ghost of SRV over copyright infringement lol.

Yeah, 1 of them lol. And a Rangemaster. They want a few more for variety. Doing a fuzz and OD250 I think.

Thanks guys. Seems like it's worth the extra cash, I'll make it a point to go test drive your suggestions within the week.
@Funkstrat/Trackman - Thanks for not limiting your suggestion to my price range. I'd rather get a quality prodcut then trash.
@ lilBB if everything moves in favor of the Visual Sound V2 maybe we can it happen.
