I Did It!
« on: November 19, 2009, 09:24:32 PM »

I first picked up the guitar this year. The second week in January. From scratch. Armed with a friends electro acoustic and youtube. Altogether its been an enjoying worthwhile start on this journey. But my aim was to be able to play properly in a year. Ive learned a lot from everywhere, its hard to say what I picked up or where. LGM was very useful for transcribing my knowledge of Keys and Bass onto the guitar. Thats where the real challenge was, splitting my practice time. I play first-keys in church consistently, and bass semi-frequently. I couldnt slack on either of them. So making time out of none was a miracle. But I did it. All by Gods Grace.

Well...

Come Sunday I will be playing in the main service. I'll be playing my dreadnought acoustic with electric pickups. Rehearsal today was great and im confident, so im praying that my confidence lasts till 9am Sunday morning. Wish me all the best.

PS: There aren't THAT many resources for gospel stuff on guitar. nowhere near as much for keys or bass. And I'm really into acoustic stuff, between Hillsong and Joe Pass.

Well that is great stuff. I remember my first time playing in front of an audience. It was quite exhilarating!

I do agree that there is not that much on gospel guitar out there. But there is a LOT of stuff on guitar in general so you can just incorporate it into your playing.

because black gospel is a melting pot of influences. there are no clear cut artists/players to draw from. it's a mixed back of funk/rock/jazz/r&b. there is no definitive black gospel style guitar. you have to draw from different influences and make them your own....then apply what you know and can play to the music you are playing.

Not to mention that black gospel is DOMINATED by organists playing in styles that leave very little linear (fills, etc) space and vertical  (sonic range) space for guitars to fit into.

I would think that on the Hillsong side there are just as many resources as there is for Gospel keys and bass. I don't know if what Joe Pass does can be translated to church playing. With a choir or just praise team singing and the congregation joining in it would seem like his style would be overwhelmed even if the band consisted of solo guitar.
