The L.A. scene is pretty much like the church scene.  It's about who you know.  After that, you gotta have the look and the right attitude and a positive lifestyle to match.  There are a lot of talented there who are not working because they are lacking in one of those areas.  But, if you create you own opportunities, you make it where ever you live!

I know a great keyboardist/organist who moved out that way to further develop his music career. It took him about 3 years to find a church to play at, and even still he's not making alot of money. Especially with everything being so expensive out there. On top of that he hasn't cracked into the music business like he had hoped to......so like drummrforlife said, you really have to know people who know people!

I live in San Diego, about an hour and a half from LA.

If you have what it takes, then don't let the "it's who you know" discourage you. If it's about "who you know" go and start meeting people. You start playing with enough people and you'll realize the big dogs network isn't to far off.
