88 keys sound better than 61???? please help....
« on: November 11, 2009, 09:32:34 AM »
I've been having problems finding a good traveling/top board. My main/bottom board is a Korg TR88. Thats not top of the line but it does it's job in church. I just hate lugging a 70 pound keyboard around. My ideal travel board would have piano sounds that are at least as good as the TR88.

I went from a Casio WK 3300 to a yamaha mm6 to a roland juno Di to a korg M50 and I'm just not satisfied with the piano sounds. They all sound either too muffled or too much like a toy. I watched someone play each of these on youtube before buying and they all tricked me. Why does youtube make them sound so good?

Im thinkin one of these may be my problem:

1. I may just not know how to tweak them right.

2. My amp may not be up to parr(Roland KC300 but it sounds great with the TR88)

3. anything 61 keys just wont sound as authentic as 88 keys.

Now, Im looking at a yamaha MO6. My price range is around $1,000.

Can anybody offer a suggestion????

roland XP-80, its 76 keys, and its heavy. The XP-50 should have the same sounds with 61 keys. Then there is the motif es6
Just because something doesent have 88 keys doesent mean its not gonna sound as good

I've played and/or owned all of the boards you mentioned, and they do indeed have bad piano sounds, but its not because they are 61 keys

If the primary sound you want is piano and you want to stay in the $1000 range and keep your gear light for travel then I would consider one of the boards in the Kurzweil SPX series. They do not have all the sounds of a motif, fantom, or triton but the feel is pretty good, they are light, and the pianos sound good. If push comes to shove you can buy a module and use the Kurzweil as a controller.

http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-KUR-SP2X-LIST - here's the 88 key and the 76 key is $100 cheaper.

for the $ ,you might get a used MotES 61,76 for that price-to avoid the weight of the 88'ts.

I got my XS 6 for $1650 used ,was like new,it's light and up-to date. Before our MOM got his roland rd 700(for the wtd keys)we were looking for another motif,we had another Clavinola that would have been used in the sanctuary, leave the weight at home for road trips.

try a set of GOOD headphones;most keyboards don't sound good in mono. When I listen to u-tube thru the "cans",even the cheap soundcards in most computers improves.

My last church had shifted to playing with headphones+it really helped!!!!!!could FINALLY hear

You can't go wrong with the Casio Priva model line. I have the Privia 300 and the 575R. When you hear it on Youtube I'm not using an external amp.
88 weigthed keys about 32 pounds for this model the 575R. Has over 500 sounds. Only drawback is no line output, headphones only. The Privia 330 has line outs and I might upgrade because of it. Cost about 699-799.00

Sunday Night Praise 2

Praise Chords for after the song

Priva 300 (replaced by 320 and 330 ) 27 lbs. Internal speaker sound awesome when I use my amp.

I love music, any kind of music.

Thanks, all drum patterns from the Casio keyboard. It's a great learning tool and it records to SD card and plays back standard midi files.
I love music, any kind of music.
