You and me both.  I think I'm the only keyboard player in this area (S.E. VA) that doesn't play the drums.

I like to rotate between instruments.

I play what I feel like playing, and what the church has room for me to play.

If all the main instruments were taken, I'd play flute or some minor instrument. It doesn't matter to me, as long as I'm given room to play.

Wow you play flute? I wish we had a sax player in our church.

I would neva eva 4 neva give up the keys. But i would love to get back 2 the drums. I play them every now and then when im at the church by myself practicing. I played the trumpet from 4th-8th grade but havent pick it up since. I really want to learn to play bass and sax. But i will stay on the keys untill the good Lord calls my name

The only reason you should retire from an instrument
it's because you have mastered it. And we all know that is impossible to do.

Some people pick one instrument and only play that one.

I started playing the Trumpet in Jr. High.

Then I started on the drums and was our main drummer for a few years.

Then I started on the Organ and Keys.  Our keys player left late last year and I've been our ONLY keys/organ guy since.

I want to learn Sax and Guitar.

There's only one of me though, and with a wife and daughter there isn't enough time to learn all the instruments I'd like to learn.

Man, once you get music in you you're DONE.

I feel you, i wouldnt call it retired. I also would like to pick up the bass, and put more time into playing drums. I thinks its cool, you would be able to play anytime almost anywhere when you can play 3 or 4 instruments, go for it!

I kinda understand where the O.P. is coming from. I'm going to do the same thing!!!
Right now I am currently the M.O.M. in my father's church. I am very well taken care of and in demand as a keyboardist/organist. But that is not where my passion lies!!!  It resides in those bass strings!!!  It's rare that a day goes by and I don't have my bass in my hands. I've never EVER felt this way about keys. I'm just polishing up my skills and waiting for that opportunity for a spot in a growing church that needs a bassist. It's gonna break my Dad's heart, (he also wants me to take over the church eventually) but I have to follow my heart. I'm not that young anymore and I have a goal of where I wanna be as a bass player in a few years. Gonna hang up the keys.....
