what do you do about more than capable singers who refuse to sing loudly and come to praise team rehearsals?

How does that make them risky?

Honestly you cant make em join the praise team if they dont want to. But you can do things to make em want to join. Offer them a chance to lead and choose the songs they would like to do, then maybe they will consider joining......

Oh thats easy then. If they dont come to the rehearsal, they dont sing on Sunday morning. Thats your new rule. Make up a list of rules that they should adhere to and have them sign it. If its written down, it will make it easier to enforce.

Also try to figure out why they dont come to rehearsal. Is it a legit reason, or are they just chillin at home?

The reason, however valid, is moot. If they don't rehearse, they don't sing. Period.

I kinda disagree. I would try to find a solution if they have a valid reason.  Take me for example, I cant make rehearsal because I'm at work. The Pastor sends me a recording of the rehearsal I learn the songs, I play on Sunday. If there is a real reason why they cant rehearse (work, school, gotta see their PO...), and they are an asset to the ministry, why let something like that stop them from serving?

The correct answer I think will depend upon the size of the church and its congregation. The larger the congregation the larger the talent pool. I recently left a praise team  at a church with 1200 or so persons attending 3 services on Sunday. This church had rules,,,if you want to sing you will rehearse. We had 7 persons singing with backups in all but the tenor. In my current church we are a start up church one year old.. We have a small congregation but are blessed with a four person praise team of great talent and dedication however it is difficult for all to make rehersals or even to have rehersals. This presents another problem..we do not have a great talent pool. So we must take it as it comes so to speak. What I am trying to say is that you have to start in one place and grow. Ultimately you need to find only a remnent, a few dedicated souls and then establish rules for all to live by. If your church is large enough,,,establish rules and stick to them,,,no reherse no sing. If not,,,move slowly towards that place by expanding your praise team and band. But by all means,,,make the music great,,,and great things will follow.

a. Those are exceptions.

b. If these exceptions occur during a person's tenure on the P/W team, then a compromise can be found. However, if one has these issues beforehand perhaps this isn't their time to sing on the P/W team? Especially if it's a smaller church with only a few members of the team anyway(especially, again, if it's a group of not-so-strong singers). Rehearsal helps with flow of service. Additionally, there's the 'blend factor'. Add the aforementioned group of not-so-talented singers, and rehearsal becomes a must.

BTJM. At the end of the day, a MOM has to use what will work for his particular house of worship. Period. There's no cookie-cutter way to music ministry.

Is the risk in the singers' voices, or their attitudes?

At times, it can be both. :-\

This a little shameless plug off topic, but Steven Ford is having a music ministry workshop in March.  Check it out at his site.
