IMO, there's a lot of Holy Ghost filled contemporary Gospel.  Alot of the traditional music is influenced by the Blues.  Alot of the early Gospel writers were from a Blues background (Thomas A. Dorsey...etc).  The traditional shout pattern is mainly a Boogie Woogie line.

I prefer Contemporary (probably because of my love for jazz, funk and R&B) but, also have a great appreciation for Traditional.  I do thinks it's very subjective because I would consider John P and Hezi as contemporary. I would consider traditional as Shirley Caeser, Dottie Peoples, James Cleveland....etc.

thats why i asked for examples. Some of John P kee and Hez older stuff is definitely traditional. but not sure where u'd put some of the newer stuff, even though newer albums do throw obviously traditional songs in there. For instance i would definitely not consider Fred Hammond traditional, but i wouldnt put him in the same category as Hillsong either. (CCM is Contemporary Christain Music, but none of the artists mentioned are categorized there, thats why im a bit confused as to whats considered contemporary and traditional, of course besides the blatant obvious stuff)

As a musician, I prefer playing the contemporary stuff more.....as a Christian, I will play and support any style that gives God the glory   8)

The church I'm currently playing for is DEFINITELY more into the traditional side though.  I still enjoy playing there though, doing so has given me a greater appreciation for the old school gospel.  Alot of contemp gospel has its roots burried deep in the more traditional stuff (older clark sisters stuff, james cleveland, hawkins family, etc)

I know this is just your opinion and I will respect that. So, you feel that there is no divine influence concerning contemporary gospel? In my opinion, 'contemporary' and 'traditional' are like clothing or even wrapping paper. The outside does not dictate what the inside is. I just think it's a little judgmental to say that contemporary is not influenced by the Holy Ghost. Fred Hammond is contemporary all the way and you cant disregard the power of the Holy Spirit in his music.

You ever hear of songs like

Jesus On the Mainline
Bless that Wonderful Name of Jesus
I Woke This Morning With Mind
When We All get to Heaven
Precious Lord
???????????

All these song were influenced by Contemporary Music (at the time) 'The BLUES'.

Oh, i've played the 12 bar bluse over many traditional song, I also throw in some r&b when I play contemporary and when I play hillsongs I have that "rock" thing going on and it sounds great ,It's the anointing of God that makes the deference.

I currently play for a cogic which has about 350 members 90% are white and they have 7 musicans and I'm the darkest one on stage  :D the majority of the song they sing are "Hillsong" so you know lately I've ben feeling like.... A "ROCKER"!!! 8).

Even though I'm playing "hillsongs" with a rock feel ,I can still feel the anointing of God when I play for him.

Traditional gospel sounds like: "bluse"

Contemporary gospel sounds like: 'R&B

Christian music( hillsong) sounds like: "Rock"

"Rock on dude  8) Rockin 4 Jesus" 8)

Fred, tye, all those guys arent considered just contemporary. They are considered urban contemporary.  Its a sub-category of contemporary.

I like it all.. I consider myself stikll on the upward cycle of the learning curve... so it's all good for me. I have only played traditional stuff to CDs though.. except for a few songs.. we do more contemporary stuff at my church so that is what I have more experience with.. but I enjoy it all...

I prefer contemporary gospel because it is more challenging for me.  a good traditional song to me, seems to be more enjoyable to play.

man i dont even look at music like that... to ME music is music. im not saying that genre doesnt exist and that i dont enjoy any certain types more than others, but for ME there's wayyyyyy too much music out there to try to identify w/ any particular subset.

as far as the idea that contemporary gospel isnt true worship (which is what i believe is being implied), alot of people would say that about any music that isnt hymns sung with just pipe organ or piano. i dont mean to be harsh or anything, but people get uncomfortable with new things, and unfortunately, many people take that uncomfortable feeling to mean "WRONG" or "INAPPROPRIATE", when in fact its just not what you're used to. it's the same feeling that 24 fans would get if alec baldwin replaced kiefer sutherland as jack bauer.

this may sound ridiculous to some of you, but think about it. we as americans are only one culture in this world. there is so much in this world, and we like to say that there are only a few kind of acceptable types of music. i'm seventh-day adventist, and this issue comes up alot in my denomination. many SDAs believe that hymns are the only kind of music. our main accepted prophet, Ellen G. White, even said that hymns were the closest to the music sung in heaven. now, i disagree with this because it's culturally jaded. how can music from EUROPE be the only acceptable style of music??? is that to say that people in india or southeast asia now must conform to a style of music that they may not even be familiar with in order for their praise to even be considered by God?????

neways, these are just my quick thoughts as i get ready for service....
