Playing in a Band Setting (Continued..)
« on: September 30, 2003, 02:43:27 PM »
Hello Everyone,

I was reading the previous post about Playing in a Band Setting.. and that one topic started I believe, by Dooley was some very helpful and interesting information. I am in a situation where I play the organ and keyboard for my church with just a drummer and we recently had someone join our church and he is a beginning Organ Player. He was asking me questions about my style and progressions to make sure he was lining up with what I was playing, but I was  not quite sure on how to actually answer his questions. I mean, we all as musicians know that we what everyone in the band to click and sound good, but someone has to be there in the band to actually tell everyone what their role or part should be. But in my case, we are a very small church and I am not a beginning player and not an advanced player,  but can hold my own and want to be able to convey to this brother the right things on what his role should be when we play together.

So I read the part where DaNatiMaestro and Hammondman were elaborating on about both of us playing the same progressions, like the 251. Can either Hammondman,  DaNatiMaestro, 4hisglory, B3wannabe, or anyone who has some experience playing in a band, take for example a whole devtional song like "I'm a Soldier" or "What a Mighty God We Serve" and break it down and show and explain what interactions are happening between the piano player and organ player. You don't have to give and spell out all the chord names, you can give the progression numbers and that will be fine. I don't want to be a leech and be all about chords, I just want to be able to understand the interaction for a whole song on what the piano and organ player is doing.

Does the piano and organ player play all of the same main progressions through the song, like the 145 when it starts off or is either the Organ player or piano play the 145 and the other fills in the gaps?

Thanks,

B3 Girl

THE KEYBOARDS CAN PLAY THE SAME NUMBERS, BUT THE PROGRESSIONS CAN VARY LOOK AT EXAMPLE BELOW. THE ORGAN WILL PAD, WHILE THE PIANIST WILL HOLD THE MELODY, PLAY MORE INVERSIONS..DEPENDS ON THE SONG. PREACHING CHORDS ARE DONE ON THE ORGAN, HAVE MORE "BITE" THAN PIANO

YOU HAVE TO BE ON THE SAME PAGE I HAVE MIDIS THAT DO THIS, PRATICE THE BASIC PROGRESSIONS: 2_5_1__//1_6_2_5_1___//5_6_2_5_1___//7_3_6_2_5_1

As far as the 2_5_1 issue, two keyboards can play the same progression, but 1 has to travel, and the other plays the pad...try this:

K - BOARD 1 [ PAD ]

CBb / BbDEbG = 2
FEb / D = 5
BbF / Dm7 = 1

K - BOARD 2 [ TRAVEL ]

CEbG / BbEbG = 2
FBb / ADGb____BbDG____CFA = 5
BbDF \ CFAC
