You pay an initial listing fee which is usually under $1. You get a basic entry with IIRC 2 or 3 regular pics. If you want to do extra pics or add more features to make your listing more noticible it there are fees for that stuff. Then if your item sells you pay a final fee depending on how much your item sold for. If you are just a now and again seller the fees aren't that bad.

You don't have to pay when you list it. Ebay sends out a invoice telling you how much you owe like weekly or monthly I dont remember. BE WARNED that if you are a new seller that when you item sells paypal will hold your money for either 30 days, they get a shipping conformation, or the buyer leaves you a positive feedback. So if its something you need to dump off for quick cash I would look elsewhere.

This should help some http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/fees.html

Try craigslist.

This...for anything local and possible stuff that's too large and too much of a hassle to ship.

I've used Ebay for years with great success, but you have to know how to word your ad properly in order to avoid future hassles.
For example, I'll try to list the shipping costs up front but I'll state that any international shipping will be calculated after the auction has ended and the buyer will be notified within 48 hours of the final cost.
I'll also put stipulations on payment, preferring PayPal to expedite immediate shipping, but I'll hold the item if the buyer is paying by check or money order, in order to avoid a scam of any kind.
Also, stating that the buyer has to pay within 5 or 7 days is good practice as I've had some people bid and win and then claim that they forgot that they even bid.

All that said, I've had REALLY good success selling stuff through craigslist. No fees =  :)

As for ebay, I've never sold anything on it, and I just bought something on there for the first time last week. I'll probably continue to buy stuff on there (from reputable sellers), but I dont think I sell stuff there.

Craigslist is great because you can get rid of stuff within minutes after posting it. I had to get rid of some speakers when I moved, and a guy picked em up within 45 minutes of me posting the ad.

And when buying stuff on craigslist you can usually negotiate a lower price, I dont know if thats possible on ebay.

I guess the downside of craigslist is that you will have to meet strange people. If I'm selling something small, I'll either deliver it or meet the person at a public location. Ladies, If you have to have the seller come to your house, make sure there is a man there to protect you.

I didn't like the looks of craigslist, lol, so I've never purchased anything from there. I love ebay though. But if craigslist has no fees, I'ma about to go check it out!

Yeah Craigslist is kind of haphazard-looking but it is not as hard to setup as you may think. I'm with U13 in that I prefer to list and buy stuff on CL. Things'll go so much faster.

Be warned though, folks browsing CL tend to be flaky. There have been times where I listed stuff, had people call saying they would come, and just...not! Its soo annoying. >:(

Craigslist is mostly about location. If you don't live near a decently populated area you won't have much luck selling esp niche items. But if you do you will have better success.

Craigslist is just as easy to set up as ebay and there are no fees for listing. A few things about craigslist is you will be spammed, and you will be low balled ei  Your selling a TV for 150 you will get email from people offering $50 bucks CASH in hand. I would say about 1 in 3 to 4 responses to your ad will be legitimate. Craigslist is more cut and dry where as Ebay is a process and a headache at times.

Very true. I dont even entertain low ball offers.

The spammers are very annoying.

I did advertise my business on there, and after 7 ads I have one job lined up this week. :-\ I dont think I'll be advertising here for long, everybody there wants a crazy deal and the competition is crazy, but its free...

I bought my Suburban from Craigslist. We'll most likely buy an RV from there as well. I bought an organ from a Craigslist-type site for organs (theaterorgans.com), back in 2003. Dude took it apart for me an shipped it to Korea. I used the pedals to make midi pedals for my Korg CX3. I had planned to use the manuals to make a controller for B4, but never got around to it, so I trashed them.

I sold my Nord Electro on Ebay, back in 2004. I'll probably put my CX3 on there...dunno.

Im a Craigs fan.

I bought my current car there $600, 5 mins from the house
I bought the laptop Im typing on for $600
I bought a drumset for $140 for the school (with hardware/cymbals/throne/sticks)
I was given a drumset for the school free (with hardware/cymbals/and sticks)
I given a trombone for the school free
I got a $20 French Horn
I got a huge assortment of classroom percussion for $120
I got my audio interface plus a 12ch Mackie mixer for $150
I got a full stereo/CD/record player/receiver for $40
I got another stereo for free
I got two djembes for $60/piece
I got a pair of congas for $60
I got a free 36" tv from there
I got a set of roto toms for $70

Craigslist equals local, which I trust more than national or international. I have ordered from Ebay, and with a reputable seller it perfect. But being an international service just invites way more scammers. Bottom line, I hate shipping fees.  And after Ive bought my stuff, Ive got it right there in my hand. No waiting, or MEDIA MAIL. Plus nobody lists free stuff on Ebay, and thats the best type of transaction for me.

You may want to set up a separate email just for eBay/Craigslist/Freecycle types of transactions.
Craigslist seems good for local area, services, and things not easily packable (like Hammond B3's).

you can create a filter in yahoo mail so that it automatically sends certain messages to certain folders. that way it wont flood your inbox. dont think gmail has that option, but you can do it in outlook and outlook express.
