3 way soundsystem
« on: February 06, 2010, 11:01:21 AM »
Recommendations for a friends' church who wants a full range system.I think they are looking at some 3 way Mackies,woofer.mid-range,tweeter with built in 400 watts that go for about 1 k each or some PV's that have a tweeter+ 2-15's;one 15 does bass and other mids.

Room size is about 100x100;so I think either would work;is it necessary or how important to have mids?

Mainly drums,keys,vocals-the bass+guitar have their own amps.

It's important to separately power the full range speakers and the subwoofers.
Modern crossover tech is good enough to properly disperse energy from a single amp to a 2 way cabinet, but the subs should have their own power.
And depending on the size and shape of the room, several smaller cabinets or a small array system is better than 2 massive cabinets so that the sound can be spread out more evenly.

I haven't heard the Mackie 3 way speakers so I really can't comment on them.  I agree with gtrdave about the sub and if you're running drums through the system, I would most certainly use a sub.  I did a gig and the sound guy used the Mackie powered 18" subs 12" 2-way cabs for the mids and highs.  The room was probably 200'x200'.  He used 4 of each and let me tell you the sound was GREAT!!!  I was impressed and that doesn't happen often.   8)

thanks guys, so it sounds like in a smaller room at least one decent sub and 2 cabs for the mids+ highs? Would something like the JBL Eons with a 12 or 15 +1" be a good choice?

If you've got a sub, a good quality 12" and a tweeter/driver (pair) is all you need for the mains. You could always compliment that rig later with side fills or something.
