Drummer playing with bass guitar
« on: February 25, 2010, 01:59:24 PM »
Does anyone know where I can get a video showing a newbie drummer why it is important to play the same thing as the bass guitar.

I have looked around youtube. Can't find what I am looking for. I remember at one time seeing a video of a bass player and the drummer playing together with a simple beat, showing how tight it sounds. Then they played the same tune but each one (at different times) over played their parts, not wrong notes or beats just playing more that was needed. Iit helped to drive home the point that you can play simple and sound good as long as it is tight.

I have heard it said that, minimally, the bass player should match the bass drum.

here's a piece of what u are talking about. i have the dvd, but i couldnt find online the part where they did exactly what you were talking about. this clip was the latter portion where they went into the keyboardist being busy. If you can get your hands on the Urban Bass Techniques DVD, what ur talking about is DEFINITELY on there.

Great clips guys! This is right where I am in terms of my focus as a bass player. I am spending alot of time playing drum loops from Reason 4 and focusing on locking with the drum kit. I think the most important aspect of rhythm is actually practicing and rehearsing with the same group as often as possible. Knowing someones style of playing and tendencies makes it easier to lock the groove, then get creative. Nothing is worse than a four piece ensemble who only rehearse doing sunday service.
