Musical is tonight. Ya'll pray for me
« on: March 22, 2010, 04:32:04 PM »
The musical is tonight. Been practicing all weekend, even until the weee hours of the morning (not so late last night, cause i wanted to get some sleep). I think im ready, but we'll see how it all goes down. i am a bit nervous.

I wont be getting in till late tonight, so i probably wont get back on here till tomorrow, but i'll let everyone know how it went.

musical was great. things started off kinda rough. They started singing songs they didnt go over for P&W (some of those songs where people assume everyone knows, but I didnt know how to play them, plus they put in a few changes that i was unfamiliar with or at least in the context of those particular songs) and they seemingly had trouble with the signal for me to come through the house. So im pushing my stage speakers to be heard. Other bass guy plugs in, instant house support. Im like thats kinda funky there, and i was a bit angry, but i was like im not gonna let that bother me.

I plug in to play the first song for the choir and i did come through the house. We rocked the song. One of the other songs we were supposed to do was cut and was supposed to go into a medley of 2 other songs that we still did, and they forgot to do the transitions we rehearsed so i was lost until they finally went into the next song. So a few mistakes here and there. I had a couple of "wow" moves so i felt good about that (i better had felt good, i been practicing all weekend).

So me and the other bass player (a third guy that came on, i dont know what happened to the other original backup. i actually have to call him and see whats up) split the set evenly, so i was cool with that, which is how it shouldve been anyway.

I was indeed nervous, but i made it through. 1 night down. 4 nights and 1 saturday morning to go.

Woohoo!  Congratulations!  Seems you "played the whole situation by ear" and did well.

Was the sound level right on or were they a bit loud?

i dont know if anybody recorded. i'll have to check by the end of the week.
Day 2: Man they killed me during P&W with those COGIC congregational songs. I guess i gotta blast G.E.Patterson on my ipod this week. we sooooo dont sing those songs at my church. I cant pick them up, just the turnarounds get me, because im not used to playing these kinds of songs with the organist so i just gotta get used to hearing his patterns.

since im going to the DI-box first and the out is going to my rig for onstage, i cant really turn down to learn the songs and then turn up full volume. im going to switch that for my setup for the rest of the week so i have more control over my volume. We rocked out and i made a few noticeable mistakes (probably more than a few) but i held it down and grabbed a couple of looks (those "he doin his thang" looks). Im feelin good and getting better!!

Day 2 done.

Great job. This situation is a driving force behind why I'm all for learning how to play by ear along with music. You really don't have to concentrate on knowing the song, but various patterns that are used in music. Congregational songs are pretty much the same pattern across the board. I've been in your position many of times, but I've made it through because I already know a lot of patterns. I definitely don't know the song, but I know patterns. Good start to the late great Bishop G.E. Patterson, but just listen to a variety of music as well.
Keep God first and he'll do the rest!!!

Sounds like you're settling into place there.  One quick suggestion.....

If you know the names of some of the songs you'll be doing over the next several days, YouTube can be your friend.  Search on the song title and you might find a video out there that helps you learn the basics of the song quickly.

For Palm Sunday we're going to do Yolanda Adams' "Victory".  Our MoM, who also plays piano for the 4th Sunday contemporary group that I lead, has balked at learning this, saying that she can't hear the piano piece over the horns and strings well enough to pick out a part.  So I went to YouTube, found a REALLY cool demo for playing it on the piano.  Long story short, my 13 yr old is gonna play the string chords on his keyboard AND play the piano part on the piano. My 11 year old will play bass.

Good luck and...............

Congratulation Floaded! I've been in the same situation also, playing by ear has always been a problem for me.If someone give me a song to learn I will learn it! but if someone sing a song that I dont no,I'm lost.

Now i'm starting to hear patterns! I study a course that T-block posted in the piano room on progressions, how just about every song follow the musical zip code..(7) 36251(4) some songs know how to cover it up,but if you listen between the lines you will hear it,now what I do when i'm practiceing is put on a CD and play songs at random,I'm not trying to learn the song, i'm listening for the zip code, and I hear it!..I feel like I discovered something new, but its been there all the time.

once again CONGRATULATION! :D

YouTube is more than a friend to me. YouTube is my "call in case of an emergency" person. lol.

the problem with that is after working 9:30 to 5:30 i head straight from work to the church which is about 40mins away from my job. We've been lucky, that services have ended early so far @ 10:30 (not sure the rest of the week will be so lucky), but even at that time since it takes me about 1hr 45mins to get home on the train, i dont get in till after midnight. I tried to do that, but i could barely concentrate through one full song. im done, and i need to get to bed to start it all over again the next day. Thats usually the problem. Its hard to get any practice in between services.

Great job. This situation is a driving force behind why I'm all for learning how to play by ear along with music. You really don't have to concentrate on knowing the song, but various patterns that are used in music. Congregational songs are pretty much the same pattern across the board. Once i switch my setup, part of the problem will be solved. Another part thats just more of an annoyance than a problem is that everybody doesnt sing/play those songs the same way. so while im like I know this song, either they sing it a different way so here and there a progression might be different, or some turn-arounds and patterns may be added by the musicians to keep the music interesting (which they do indeed accomplish and are simple, but im not familiar with them). so while im playing along because i know the song  and it goes into the next(u know how they just chain one song into the next) and i just hear a different turnaround or progression and im like "ok, thats new"
