Just starting Keyboard/Pian0
« on: March 13, 2010, 04:21:46 PM »
Hello Fam,

I am just starting the keyboard and would one day like to play for my church. I am looking at so much and want to get more focused. I would like my style to be Gospel with a hint of Neo Soul. What would you just I start doing first. I am currently learning blues scales. Is that the right direction? I would like to play my first song in 3 months. Any advice would be great.

Thank you,

Mike

First, you must know the notes fluently.  Yes, it is possible to learn blues scales and not know the names of the notes fluently.  If I ask you to play any note, you should be able to play that note instantly without so much as a second thought.

Second, you must learn all the Major Scales fluently.  Meaning that if I ask you to play an E Major scale you can play it instantly, with correct fingering, without so much as a second thought.  You must eventually learn the blues scales, but the Major Scales are foundational to playing.

Third, you learn the number system (C is the '1' of the C Major scale, D is the '2' in the C Major scale, etc..)

Fourth, you learn the major and minor triads.

Fifth, you learn the Circle of 4ths and the Circle of 5ths.

The link T-Block provided is a treasure trove of information.  That should keep you busy for quite some time.  I know it seems like a lot, but it's the foundation to becoming a good musician.
