Christian music in minor keys
« on: May 21, 2010, 08:23:18 AM »
Hi, everybody,

I play the Portuguese guitar.

I would like to ask, does anyone know any Christian gospel music books that play all minor keys?

As long as the songs are in the traditional style, not comtemporary.

Thank you.

Why minor keys?  It seems to me that the majority of traditonal black gospel music is heavily blues based with major harmonies and pentatonic minor melodies.  With contemprary gospel being based on R&B/funk, I think that you'll find more minor key songs, but the major keys are still more common.

Welcome to LGM, lorgo.

I would search www.Sheetmusicplus.com for Praise+Worship sheet music and fakebooks, like Integrity, Vineyard and the WOW series. They would have some songs in minor keys - Am, Em, Dm are popular Guitar keys. If you read TAB, search for books in that format. These are mostly CCM. Many Hebrew-flavored songs are minor, like KING OF KINGS and many by Paul Wilbur.

Many Gospel songs tend to be in FLAT keys like Db, Ab, Eb, etc. Very unfriendly for the beginning Guitar. You can put Capo on the 1st fret and play in the next key down, like chords in G for a song in Ab. And since Gospel is heavily influenced by the Blues, you'll find that major/minor ambiguity with the Blue notes, so they are really in between Major and Minor.

Some Spirituals and Classic Gospel songs in minor keys -

Go Down Moses
Wade In The Water
Keep Your hand on the Plow
Lord, Don't Move that Mountain

A more current minor Gospel chorus is LION OF JUDAH (Em) - I think that's done by Eddie Long -

Hi, betnich,

Thank you so much for replying.

I like to play Christian music in Hebrew-flavored music or Mediterranean style, which are very emotional and very sentimental.

That is why the Portuguese guitar that I play has a very beautiful delicate sound.  That musical instrument is very soul-soothing, because of the beautiful sounds.

For the advice that you gave me, I should search for them.

Again, thank you so much for replying.

Have a good day and God bless you.
