When kin of slaves and owner meet
« on: May 20, 2010, 12:49:47 PM »
http://www.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/05/20/slavery.descendants.meet/index.html?hpt=C1

The article talks about a relationship (being kin to each other) a descendent of a slave and a descencent of the slave owner. I just find this very reconciling and empowering.

This is a great article.  Hatred truly only hurts yourself.  If this message were spread more often and accepted, many people would be set free from racism.

I find this thread interesting because there is a prominent jewelry store in town whose owner has the same last name as me.  I bought my wife's engagement and wedding ring there and several years later I took it back there to replace a stone that came off of it.  I got a call from the owner telling me that because we have the same last name the stone would be replaced free of charge.  Needless to say we always use his store for major jewelry purchases and services.

I most recently talked to him a few months ago when I had my wedding band and 10 year anniversary band resized.  I can't bring myself to ask him but I always wondered if in the back of his mind he is wondering if we may be related. Lol

Life is kinda short. Do you care or are you just intrigued by the possibility? If you really care to know, it might be worthwhile to look into it.  You could either have a genealogist do it, or even check out one of those websites like Legacy.com.  If you're just intrigued, then there's probably no need to go through all that.  :D

Years ago, my former pastor's brother (who is a historian) researched their family tree. He actually found their living relatives in Africa, and plenty of the descendants of ancestors who were brought to the US on slave ships from Africa.

A couple of months ago, a girl on FB contacted me trying to figure out if we were related. I felt bad for her because she really cared and I really didn't. I'm not really into stuff like that, and plus, my last name is not that uncommon so I can't be related to them all. LOL

I've called people on the phone to see if we were related. Social networking makes it a lot easier.

The census records are a good place to start, if you want to know about your family tree. It will at least tell you who was in the same home.

Ancestry.com is another good site.

There was a series of stories similar to this recently in the LA Times - about a white reporter named Joe Mozingo who found free and slave black ancestors going back to the 1700's. I suspect a lot of Southern families are like this; either through ancestors owning and fathering children by slaves or passing (often both, like Thomas Jefferson) they have a 'white' and a 'black' side....

Very good stuff.

One question i always had was, if the blacks were so inferior, why bother mating with them in the first place?

(oops) Using Iphone so accidently touched 'post'.

Anyway, yeah I kind of would like to know if there is a connection. I am interested in geneology. I actually did some research on 'Family Tree' website a few years ago when I was planning our family reunion. I printed off the actual census records with names of foreparents I had heard of from the stories from aunts and uncles. I probably will at some time do some deep research when I have time and resources.
