Compliments
« on: May 19, 2010, 11:47:21 AM »
Last night I received a compliment from someone I looked up to when I was learning to play in church. I actually sat and watched this guy play some years ago and the Lord just gave me an understanding of how to play left hand chords. That was a weird day. The mystery was revealed. ;D He said I've improved since the last time he heard me. I didn't feel like I have seeing I have not been practicing much in the last few years. Last night I actually felt like I have gone a little backwards but today I was like wow. That compliment made me feel good knowing how the Lord has used this guy as a musician in the past. Kind words go a long way.  :)

it's always nice to have someone who you look up to give you praise for something you worked hard at...

lol That was a supernatural occurance  ;D but I guess I should be able to explain it. It's really all the same stuff people post but I wasn't at that level back then till after that night. I immediately went home and was able to play LH chords in a manner I was not able to previously. I have learned since then I have an ability to absorb things from individuals at time. Like a playing style if it within my ability to do.  Which is basically an understanding. Pretty much the light bulb came on.  :D I can help you out thought if you need help.

Actually, I really need help with finger independence.

I didn't know people struggle with that.  Maybe I should give keys another shot.

My parents put me in piano lessons when I was younger, but I couldn't get my left hand to do anything different from what my right hand was doing, so I figured it wasn't for me, and never looked back.

I didn't know that was something I could learn:-\

Our organist learned that Charlie Brown song by listening to it, he said he did it to work on independence.  It was pretty cool to watch him learn it.

MM, that's really quite special.  I know the feeling!  I've had my friend who started me out using photoshop stop by my FB page and pay me compliments on my work.  It's a very good feeling.

Getting compliments from someone who u feel is beter than you definitely goes a long way. I got a compliment about my drum skills from some professional guys and it made me feel like I was a drummer again, even though I think I suck sometimes.

So, what's the secret bout them LH chords? I know what to play most times, but just can't get there fast enough with my LH. My brain is just stuck on the RH chording channel. I guess I need to just get down to business and practice.

I didn't know that was something I could learn:-\

Oh yeah Rue Rue, u can learn anything on the keys. If you can hear it, u should be able to play/learn how to play it.

Our organist learned that Charlie Brown song by listening to it, he said he did it to work on independence.  It was pretty cool to watch him learn it.

You definitely do need hand independence to pull that song off correctly. I've been practicing it for a looonngggg time and I still can't play it correctly.

If you know how the extended chords are formed a simple method of learning left hand chords is to play octave bass, chord, extended chord. I use this at times when playing. For example I will play low C octave, then play seven based chord shell, then play an extended chord. I works better if you have a 76 or 88 key.
Ex

LH
C-C
CEBb
EBbEb

Lets say you are in F and play 2-5-1 which is C. When you play C play the example above.
RH/LH
Key F
2-5-1

GBD/BbDFA
CC/BbDbEG
CEBb/DbEG
EBbEb/AbC
FCF/EGAC

When you do this you learn the bass note that goes with the larger chords. This is a quick example but another good method is to first learn to play LH root triads with RH melody or chord first. Next, learn LH root seven based chords like maj7, dom7, min7... You should get a hymn book and practice this method. That's your foundation. I still need to work on melody myself. I would have to elaborate in a chat.  ;D

Your story tells me that you must have helped a lot of people over the years.  That's a testimony in itself.
