eBay Scam Alert!!!! Be careful!!

I almost fell for what I am sure is an eBay scam today.  Here's what you need to watch out for.....

I received an email saying that I was going to receive a strike because I had not paid for an eBay item I had won on auction.  The email included a link to the "item" and a link to the requirements for appealing the feedback and warned that my account could be suspended if I did not resolve it.

My first instinct was to click the link to the item.  I was thinking, "maybe somebody hacked my account and ordered something".  Then it occurred to me that the link might take me somewhere I didn't want to go so I escaped out.  Then I went to a different computer and logged into my eBay account.  No messages from eBay.  No won auctions with payment required.  I searched for the "item number" provided in the bogus email.  It doesn't exist.

If you get an email saying you're gonna get dinged for not paying for a purchase, don't follow the link.  Go to your eBay account and make sure all is right there.

Never click links in email. Copy and paste it into the address bar or mouse over it to see it.

I've received this type of email as well along with emails claiming that my account had been hacked and/or suspended.  Only thing was, that particular email account was not connected to my eBay dealings.

Usually I do.  This time I was away from home and on my Blackberry, so mousing over doesn't work.  I just waited 'til I got home and went to eBay.com to check it out.

Dang man, good lookin out.

My co-worker got a virus over the weekend from clicking on an iPads link. My boss, the CEO, got about 10 e-mails in a row from her advertising this sale on iPads.

I'm usually pretty paranoid about clicking anything, but I did get had a couple of weeks ago when someone from my church sent me a link with no explanation. That wasn't really unlike her, so I clicked it. It was a viagra ad with sex toys and things. I immediately changed my password, and didn't have any problems. Coincidentally, I got that same link from about 10 people in my contacts, none of whom are connected to each other.

You need to watch what you do on Facebook, as well. Some of those games and quizzes are just spamming tools.

Yep. I stopped the quiz thing a long time ago, and the only games I've played are Uno and Family Feud (thanks to BBG  ::)). I got that one virus a few months ago (don't even remember how I got it, probably a video link or something), and I'm just paranoid now. I won't click on much of anything.

I've gotten these emails. I've also received paypal scams. I always forward the emails to them and ebay. They'll usually confirm it's a scam and thank you for forwarding it to them.

There are so many ways to take that out of context.  

But back on topic.......I REFUSE to play any of those Facebook games.  Every one of them warns you up front that they are going to need to access your profile information and contact lists.  I'm not typically paranoid, but in this case, better safe than sorry.  My former pastor was disappointed that I refused to participate in "Mafia Wars" and my sister keeps inviting me to play"Farmville".  I recently offended several other family members because I refused to participate in this "Family Tree" business.  I'm like, "If you don't know we're related then you sure as heck don't need Facebook to remind you of that."
