My New Guitar Goal (Awesome Dueling Guitar Duet)
« on: June 03, 2010, 02:29:00 AM »
So this is my new guitar goal.  This should keep me busy for the rest of my life.  :D :D :D
I really don't care that it sounds like something out of a Sonic the Hedgehog video game I just think this is cool.  Also, they have some nice shots of their hands so maybe that will help.

Orianthi - Highly Strung ft. Steve Vai

@ The beginning what are they using to make that sound come out of their guitars?

@ 1:59...there is no way she got that sound out of her guitar by doing that.  :-\  Then again...

@ 2:57...that never works when I try to do it.  :D  My guitar sounds so dorky when I do that.  :D :D

BTW:  When I play individual notes my wrist looks about as stiff as (if not more stiff than) Steve Vai's.  How can I loosen it up and still be accurate like Orianthi's wrist?

You have to experiment with different pick grip positions. I noticed that my wrist was too stiff when playing lead and it really hampered my speed. So I took time to focus on my right hand, pick grip and loosening up my wrist. Also try using different picks until you find the one that gives the max comfort to your hand.

The beginning can be done with just a swirly pick scrape (watch Vai - he's also using his other hand to mute and create different pitched overtones). Not sure what she's using, but you can do that without any gadgets.

@1:59, combo of pick scrapes and looong slides down the top strings. No need to go overhand, it's just flash...

The tapping part is definitely a big part technique, but you also need the right sound on your amp.

Personally, I never tap, I went through that stage and gave it up shortly afterward lol. It's cool, but just not my thing.

Look up some lessons on tapping, I'm sure they're all over youtube.

(you'll also notice that they are both playing with a good amount of delay on their guitars. WORL of difference when you're trying to get that BIG sound).

I feel Jay on the tapping thing. I never tapped and wasn't interested in it. Plus the style of music I play doesn't require such techniques. Still a neat trick to have though.

Well it is Steve Vai we're talking about here.  If you get to that level by the time  you're 70 you would have done quite well  :D.

Also, Gibby, IIRC, she's Australian, so she'll have a cool accent, as well lol.

Cool stuff.

Yeah, Koda, be careful to not confuse what you see on the video wit what you're hearing. They're probably over-dramatizing the hand motions for the camera.

I didn't proof-read, Gibbers. Read his post and you'll see he says "wit" instead of "with". :)

I've worked in broadcasting and with multiple "Steady-Cam" shots from various angles, some good video editing software/hardware and a darn good video engineer at the controls, you can create a super productions like that. A good video engineer is like a good recording studio engineer. A very busy person that can make some big bucks.  8)
I bet they used a sound track and several takes to later sync it all up in post production into what you now see.  8)

yeah, the tap lick at 2:57 was a pretty basic pentatonic/blues lick. 3 note stretch in his left hand with the quick tap with his right.
