I don't think that's what I said.

And I think you may be referring to spiritual rest. It's not deep like that at all, as I suspect you already know.

Jesus and all the other Jews rested in the natural - literally, not spiritually, which is what I believe we are to do.

Ah, ok.  We're speaking physical rest.  So do you follow guidelines for physical rest associated with the sabbath, or do you just rest?   ?/?

How are you observing the sabbath?

Ah, ok.  We're speaking physical rest.  So do you follow guidelines for physical rest associated with the sabbath, or do you just rest?   ?/?

How are you observing the sabbath?

I think I pretty much follow all the Biblical guidelines associated with the Sabbath. I definitely don't just rest. That wouldn't work for me since I still go to church on Sundays. If I worked Monday through Friday and rested all day Sabbath, I wouldn't get anything done at all, since my church is in Alabama and my day job is in Atlanta.

I observe by not buying or selling, or working (secular work or housework), or doing any sort of business (like paying bills, running errands, etc.) or engaging in secular entertainment like watching secular tv, listening to secular music, clubbing (j/k) or anything like that. I also devote a lot of time to renewing my mind and relaxing my body, mind and spirit by reading the Word, praying, meditating, studying, fellowshipping with the saints...  When I'm bored (or have no ministry to do), I watch DVDs or crochet.  A typical "Sabbath day in the life of LaRue" entails mostly ministry. Of the 24 hours of Sabbath, I probably spend about 9 hours asleep, about 2 hours lounging around, and about 8-12 hours doing ministry.  Oh, and I recently joined our new choir at church, so now I'll be rehearsing for a couple of hours on the Sabbath.

Is that what you wanted to know?

And this includes not kindling any kind of light (including light switches) after sunset, not cooking, not lighting any fire (which would include your stove/oven), not taking any "burden" out of your home, not calling any kind of Customer Service number, not picking up any dry cleaning, and not taking public transportation?

You can't buy, and you can't cook, so are you preparing food the day before?

You can't light your oven, so do you use your microwave to warm up the food?

The light thing is new to me, so yes, I do use light after sunset and before sunrise.

I do not cook during the Sabbath, even though I don't consider cooking a task, most Sabbatarians do consider that to be work. To be transparent, I have baked bread a few times on the Sabbath because it really doesn't feel like work to me, but I don't do it on the regular... mostly when I need a therapeutic activity, and for me, baking bread is very therapeutic. Since I wasn't raised to be a Sabbath-keeper, I don't have any doctrinal customs or habits. I'm strictly Bible, to the best of my understanding and ability. There are quite a few things they do that don't really work for me, and since I can't find any Biblical support, I do what I understand to be right.

IRT cooking. From what I understand (and Fred and Jeremy can correct me if I'm wrong) most Sabbath-keepers prepare food before sunset and warm it up (microwave or oven, I don't know) on the Sabbath.

Unlike most Sabbatarians, I don't have a tradition of eating a huge Sabbath dinner. On the contrary, I do the big dinner thing on Sunday. So on Saturdays, I eat stuff like sandwiches, cold salads that were previously prepared, stuff like that... This is normal for me because my mom never cooked on Friday and Saturday anyway. Fridays we did pizza, Chinese or fast food and Saturdays, it was every man for himself. LOL. So I'm accustomed to eating "whatever I can find" on Saturdays.

And no, I haven't lit any fires to my knowledge.

I definitely don't call Customer Service (that's doing secular business) or pick up dry cleaning or any other errands or secular business.

Can you give me a reference for the "burden" thing? I'm not sure what that is, but unless it means walking my dog, I probably don't take any burdens out of my home on the Sabbath.  :D

I don't like denomination as well.  I think it is one of the many things that cause division in the body of Christ.  I don't like to be catergorized by denomination.  I am a Christian.  I am not Baptist, Pentecostal (sc), COGIC, etc.  I believe that the word of God is the final athority and the principle that I live by.  If it says it, I believe it.  If I don't know or if I am not sure, I will ask the Father for interpretation.  The way I see it, there is no denomination in the body of Christ.

"There is one body and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling.  One Lord, one faith, one baptism.  One God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in you all." - Eph. 4:4-6.

Can you give me a reference for the "burden" thing? I'm not sure what that is, but unless it means walking my dog, I probably don't take any burdens out of my home on the Sabbath.  :D

Exodus 35:3

Ye shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations upon the sabbath day.

Baking bread doesn't break the sabbath because it's work.  It's breaking the sabbath because you're using fire.

Also, In the winter if you turn up your thermostat causing a gas or oil furnace to start, you've lit a fire.

Observing the sabbath seems less liberating and more going back to the law to me.  It's not easy.  The punishment for breaking the Sabbath under the Old Testament is death, and I won't stand for ANYBODY tryna kill my LaRue!   >:(

The way that I see it, if you observe 9 rules of the Sabbath and break 1, it's the same as doing none.

You haven't kept the Sabbath at all.

I think it's wonderful that you give the day to the Lord for that day!  You don't watch secular TV on the day you use as your Sabbath.  The Super Bowl comes on on a Sunday.  Right there God and I would have to come to some kind of an arrangement.   :D

My real issue is that my interpretation of certain New Testament scriptures seem to indicate that the observance of a day, the sabbath day in particular, is not under the new covenant.  Others interpret it differently.  I won't go into that though.

I wouldn't say what you're doing is wrong, because you're giving the Lord the day and abstaining from secular things.  That can NEVER be wrong.  I would just say that you aren't really observing the Sabbath in it's entirety.

I'm not tryna go after you.  You know I love you.   :-*

Reference to the 'burden' scripture:

Jeremiah 17: 21-22:

21 Thus saith the LORD; Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem;

22 Neither carry forth a burden out of your houses on the sabbath day, neither do ye any work, but hallow ye the sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers.

1. Baking bread in an electric oven is not kindling fire.
2. Using a space heater to warm your home isn't kindling fire.
3. I'm reminded of the historical context and the letter of the law vs the spirit of the law.

I would indulge in this discussion about the day I "use" as my Sabbath (I didn't choose the Sabbath, God did), but I can see now that your questions weren't really genuine, they were more like a set-up to try to point out flaws in my observation of the Sabbath. To that, I can only say: he that knoweth to do good and doeth it not, to HIM it is sin. God doesn't judge us for what we don't know. So thusfar, I have indeed kept the Sabbath holy to the glory of God.

Oh and one other thing, you're safe as it relates to the Superbowl. Sunday is not the Sabbath.

*done* I have never debated or argued about this subject (or other sensitive subjects) and I'm not going to start now. If I had known where your line of questioning was heading, I wouldn't have answered at all. *shrug* :-*

Just FYI (and I think I'm going to stop trying to get this point across because I don't think people really get it): UPC, PAW, etc. are not denominations.

Thanks, I didn't know.  I've never looked into them much.  I was interested in this girl at one point that was PAW....then another girl that was UPC....and ...whatever that story doesn't matter.  smh

Excellent post.

If more people would say things in away that didn't beat people over the head, I think more people would take a step back and really take a look at what they believe, and why.   This is much better than the:

You'r going to HELL.
approach. :)

who said someone was going to hell? and just out of curiosity why would you rather hear something that's better suited to what you want  that may not be correct(not saying anyone was wrong, just a statement) instead of hearing the truth straight out of the bible?

The word (the Bible) is called a sword because it CUTS.  It makes us look at ourselves and access our standards and how it measure up to God's plan. You aren't going to like everything that you ready, but that doesn't mean that you can disregard it without taking it in context of the ENTIRE bible. Everything in the bible isn't a peace and love message, so why would you approach it all as it is?

This is why there are denominations and why there always will be until Christ's return.
Somebody put me in the key of E#

Yeah, here's a small example of the differences between a denomination and an organization:

Denomination - Pentecostal
Organizations - COGIC, Church of God, Church of God Seventh Day, Church of Christ, Church of the Living God

Denomination - Baptist
Organizations - Southern Baptist, Anabaptist, Free Will Baptist, Missionary Baptist, Full Gospel Baptist

Denomination - Apostolic
Organizations - COOLJC, UPC, PAW, BWWW, IBW, FBH, AOH, Church of the Living God (a diff one)

Denomination - Methodist
Organizations - CME, UMC, AME, AMEZ

Obviously, those aren't all the organizations that belong to those denominations. I just gave a few examples off the top of my head from each.

PREACH LARUE!!!! GLORAYYYY LOL  This agreement thing is scaring me.  I need to start a discussion so we can get back to disagreeing. :D

Oh, and one more thing - don't bother. Odds are against you that it'll last. Apostolics can be a very difficult bunch when it comes to relating to non-Apostolics.

Why do you say I wasn't genuine?  I disagree with you, but that doesn't make me less genuine!!!

Now that kiss you ended your post with?  THAT wasn't genuine!

Felt like a kiss of death!!! :D

It was genuine. It was the kind of thing I'd do in real life to (a) prevent an argument/debate from getting too heated, and (b) end on a positive note so there's no lingering tension.  :)

I don't think you were really genuine because at the end, it was obvious that your questions were leading. Though I didn't realize it right away, you were intent on proving that I don't keep the Sabbath holy (which I deeply resent).

Bottom line: to each his own. I have never (here or anywhere else) set out to convince anyone to observe the Sabbath, and I appreciate it when people don't set out to convince me not to - or try to say that I don't.
