Going To Church Just Because You Have Something To Do?
« on: August 08, 2010, 08:42:43 AM »
What do you think about going to church just because you have something to do like usher, sing, play, etc.  Do you feel that only going to church because you have something to do may make it harder for someone to receive the Word?  Do you feel that it doesn't matter as long as they're there to receive it?  Do you have any other opinions on this?  What say you, LGM?

There are times when I do come to church just because I have to (I'm just being real). I believe that is the 'pressing' about which the Bible speaks. When, in our flesh, we 'just don't feel like it' but go, nonetheless, I believe that is when God can truly use us.

We're broken, but not destroyed. We must keep moving and allow God to make up the remainder.

I would say that I'm about 50/50 in terms of how often I feel like going versus when I go just because someone is counting on me to be there for one reason or another.

It is what it is. I believe God honors my sacrifice ("press") especially since no one would ever know by looking at me or talking to me that I would rather be elsewhere.

And total cosign to what Jonathan said. My sentiment to a tee.

Part 2:  (Thought of this one at church.  No particular story attached to it) What if a person is only on time when they have to do something during the service?

sir i know many pastors/leaders who have felt the same way.  but often God blesses us because we have pushed beyond our feelings.

Some people go to church just because it's part of a routine.  How else do you explain "church folks?"

Well I don't go to my Sunday morning worship just because I have to play. I would be there regardless. However there are a whole bunch of service I attend that I wouldn't have been at or even known about if I didn't have to play for a group or something.

I never think about it the way you phrased it since pretty much every Sunday I have something to do at somebody's church.  But sometimes on those rare occasions where I have a Sunday "off", I do think about ditching.  I think it's more of a mental fatigue thing than an "I only need to be there if I have something people are counting on me for" thing.

I will say that the two Sundays in July when were out of town on vacation, i didn't even think about going to church  :-[ so maybe you have a point.

I don't know that there is anything behind that or that one should concern themselves with the movements and actions of others.

I know that I would only 'make it' to church if I had a Sunday 'off'. Meaning, I probably would miss Sunday School that Sunday and just be there for the start of service. *kanyeshrug*
