Tobias Pro 5
« on: June 18, 2010, 08:34:20 PM »
I'm looking at a  used Tobias Toby  Pro 5 I saw for $320. I know its not a mtd but this would be my first bass. This seems to be a good bass to start with and grow into. What's your perspective about this bass? Deal or no deal?

Appreciate it.

UPDATE!!! The guy said it had passive pups and was a Tobias Neptune. But when looking at it, looks like a Toby Pro.

Thanks in advance for the input.

just my 2 cents, stay away from the toby pro series.  for 320.00 you can find something much better.  in my experience the quality is very poor with the toby basses.  again just my thoughts.

I actually owned a Toby some years ago. In contrast to most statements, the bass was actually well made. Most were well made. I gigged mine for 8 years straight with not a single issue! The only bad thing was it's weak preamp and pickups. Very low output. Slap a Bart system in there and you have a very nice bass! But make no mistake, they are not Michael Tobias basses. Only the body shape and headstock design were used. They were made by Gibson offshore in Korea.

Just in case there is any doubt, here is a pic of me playing mine some years ago. Mine was the Deluxe model with Jazz pickups.

Appreciate the perspectives. Anyone else? Originally they agreed to take $35 off the $359 asking, but now they have a change of heart. My plan was to use those savings  for a set up. Instead now I would have to pay $400 which includes shipping and taxes, not sure if I want pay. But DW u make a compelling argument.
