string spacing on Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V
« on: November 10, 2010, 01:39:49 PM »
I am still looking for my next bass and I'm down to the Lakland 55-01 and the Fender Deluxe Active Jazz V

I like the lakland, I actually played one. The neck is nice :)

I was just wondering if anyone knew the string spacing for the Fender. I have yet to play one. I'm looking for about 19mm or 3/4" string spacing. I have fat fingers. :D

I have them both and the spacing is great.  I have big hands AND slap alot, so the spacing is perfect to me.  It just comes down to what you want.  IMO, the Lakland feels the best and has the most comfortable neck.  On the hand, a fender is a fender.  I like the active jazz because I like having more control over the sound than the regular v/v/t configuration.  The Lakland has more bottom, but the fender has a little more tonal possibilities.  Producers and audio engineers prefer my Lakland actually.  Hope that helps lol.

Depends if the Fender is US or MIM. The MIM has tighter string spacing. Definitely not 19mm. The US is a hair under 19mm. More like 18.50mm-18.75mm.

Yo Bassbygrace and DW, while you brought up Lakland and you both own them I might as well add, Im planning on buying a Lakland Skyline in the next month or so and could not choose between the 55-01 and 02. .Price isnt really an issue but Ive seen more cats on the 55-02 and the Bottom and tone just blew me away. Is there really a difference between the two ? Which 1 do you guys prefer ?

I'd cop the 02.  Between the two, its more versatile and has the same really comfortable neck.  I got the 55-01 because it was a steal on musicians friend at the time.  I love it, but Ive played a 55-02 and you get a few more options tonally.

I'd say the 55-02 as well. Much more tonal options and better pre-amp. I own a 55-01 and a Joe Osborn 5. Having said that, I had a 55-02 first and didn't feel comfortable with it due to the pickup placing. On a Jazz bass, I like to play in between the 2 pickups. On the 55-02, if I played just below the jazz pickup, the strings felt to rubbery. If I played over the MM pickup, the strings felt too stiff. I ended up trading it for the JO5 which is a better fit for me. I'm just a Jazz bass junkie!

Get the 55-02.  I just got one 3 days ago off of talkbass.  The tone is awesome.  Mines has the Bart electronics.  The newer 55-02 come with Lakland electronics.
