It is my belief that if gas rose to 10.00 a gallon,    people  would continue to use it as we do today.

I know that isn't the case for everyone, ( me included)   but they wouldn't need everyone to stay on gas if it got to be that high.

I'm betting that your metro cards and the  public transportation prices would also shoot way up,   although probably not at the rate  that das went up.   So no matter what, the oil industry execs would still make their money.

I basically agree with uriah and Sjohn.   Until it brings the economy to a significant halt ( or pause)  you won't see any real movement  in gas prices (going down I mean).    I doubt they would shoot up to 10.oo  immediately, but I can easily see them hitting us with a nickel or dime a year until  we get to that point.

For those of you who are still in school,   if your university offers degrees in chemistry, or chemical engineering,  a bet you that a booming  industry that will be coming up VERY soon   would be alternative  fuel cell development.

Danggg, y'all still have dollar vans??  LOL!  I haven't heard of those in years!

(And by the way, they probably will be called "five-dollar vans" if gas went up to $10/gal)  :D :D :D :D :D

And that's economics. If they do it gradually people will complain but get used to it. If it just spikes up real high they would definitely do something about it.

I know this is a silly question, but I just saw, for the second time, the commercial about a CNN special they're doing to explore what would happen in the US if a major hurricane hit (like Katrina), causing gas prices to rise to $10/gallon.

So, how would your life change if gas went up to $10/gallon in the near future, assuming your income didn't inflate accordingly?

if i kept driving my vehicle it would be about $13,520 a year on gasoline purchases alone... Yep my vehicle would become an instant yard statue.

However the price of everything would skyrocket.

No more dollar menu at McDonalds. Therefore I would open up a vending machine business where you can buy ALL! of your groceries I'm even including live lobster and crab at these vending machines. Why? because people won't want to drive to a grocery store.

... actually seeing the price of gas i might need to get started on this idea now LOL

Now you're talking.  It's times like this when people start new innovations out of sheer necessity.  People instinctly know how to adapt to survive, so I'd imagine we'd see some great new ideas come from such a situation.  Now PH, you'll really be cookin' when you figure out how to minimize the cost of your delivery trucks/vans and the inflated cost of your shipments to stock the machines.

:D :D :D  I haven't heard that in years!  My cousin used to hit me with that all the time...

Me:  Cousin, can you take us to the store?
Cousin:  Ask Pat Turner to take you.
Me: Who?
Cousin: Pat your feet and turn them corners! *Ridiculous laughter*
Me: *straight face*

Well that only happened once, then it was just the first line, and I'd just rolled my eyes and he'd crack up laughing, LOL!

I haven't read through all of the posts but I noticed a lot of the focus being on how we would get from point A to point B.

That wouldn't even be my main concern being that the price of bread would jump to like 10$ a loaf. It's already over 3$ now.

I don't know if this point has been made but everything... and I mean everything moves by truck. So if truckers have to charge the super markets a lot more money to deliver milk, who do you think it falls on in the end.

It all goes back to politics. Big oil has there way because they have the money to buy politicians.

We can put a man on the moon, clone animals, and find water on Mars. Finding an alternative energy for vehicles could have been done long ago but, it all comes down to money. The rich are most definitely getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.

Anyway, here's my reply to the 2-1/2 year old question.....

I could get to work and back without using gas.  Then plug it in, rinse, repeat.

Actually, it gets even deeper than that.  How much of what we use today is made from plastic?  Most plastics are petroleum based.  Oil is important for a reason.  A whole bunch of reasons.
