Hey everyone! I'm kind of new to this site. Actually I came upon this website one day when I was searching the web.  I "tinkle" on the piano a bit, but I'm no muscian. I often check the web for different sites to learn a few new things about playing and I was looking for anything on the gospel music style which is how i found this site. Not to mention I am very glad that I did. But, I don't really read music.  I read the treble cleff just fine, maybe not fast enough fine. Its, the bass cleff that my problems come in at. I am more of a play by ear or sight (if that makes any sense) type of person. Meaning, if I watch someone play a song, I can play it back. So when I take music home that I am not familiar with, its hard for me to read the music and play if I don't have the melody already in my head. Does anyone have any suggestions on teaching myself to read music better. What I do know I have taught myself. I've had a passion for the piano since I was about 7. Right before my grandmother passed (Which was around then) she started teaching me to play. I'll never forget the song she was teaching me, it was "Jesus Loves Me". And she passed before she could finish our lessons. I had been determined to learn ever since. I've always loved to sing and to "try to" play the piano. My folks never could afford the lessons. Well, enough of my rambling. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome cmissg.  You can ramble anytime yuo want.  :)  This is not really an answer (probably that you were looking for) to your question but I think that the only thing that can improve your sight reading is practice.  Since you know the bassic principles already.

Check out Sam Tolbert's website, he's fantastic.  Another great resource is Sam Tolbert's midi files that you can downlowad for free from www.godsgospel.com. Here's how to do it:

If you have a sound card on your computer you can download about a million midi/music files that are all downloadable for free on the internet.  There is classical, rock, pop, choral, instrumental - you name it.

First download the free midi player.  It’s set up as a Karaoke player, but it plays all midi files that are on the internet. Free karaoke player:

http://www.vanbasco.com/products.html

make the player the “default” player for midi files.

Push “play” on the player in the upper left hand corner and you’ll hear your song.

If you like, you can adjust the speed, key and volume on the control on the bottom right.

On the control panel on the lower left you can “mute” any instrument or hear it played “solo” by pressing either the red or green button next to the instrument named.

Lots of free christian midi songs:

http://www.godsgospel.com

go to midi page, then click on “midi’s A to Z”, then click on any title of  about 200 songs you want – the player will play the song in about 15 seconds, and you can use the player to determine key, tempo, and solo and mute any of the instruments played, especially the instrument that is playing the melody.  (Midi’s that I particularly like are usually done by Sam Tolbert.)
