Need your help...AGAIN!!!
« on: July 19, 2010, 12:49:16 AM »
I'm looking for an amp...I'm pretty clueless in this department.  I don't think I need anything to huge right now because I'm not playing anywhere.  I've been searching for awhile.  Any input from you guys would really be appreciated.  I would like to stay under $750...I seen this one on musician's friend.

I personally did not like the shuttle 3.0 paired with the 8" when I played through it.

It felt like it was missing a lot of its sound. I'm sure if you were playing in a small group it would be able to cut through the mix. I just didn't like the feel.

Yeah, I wouldn't suggest the Shuttle 3.0 8T combo either but the Shuttle 3.0 used with a 4ohm 1x12 cab would be a nice small rig.

If I had $700 I would go for the shuttle ($499 new on amazon) and pair it with an Avatar SB112 ($289)

http://www.avatarspeakers.com/ I believe they are light weight I personally have never played through one though :(

Okay I'm over the budget ... I know by quite a bit ... I'm sure you can find a lightweight cab to pair it with.

Maybe you can do with Floaded27 did and get a Peavey PA speaker that?

Too bad you weren't looking for an amp a month ago. I had a Shuttle 3.0 (w/case and speaker cable) for sale for $400! That would have left you with $300 to find a nice used cab!

Honestly DW, I'll take either one right now but if I can find an amp/cab config...I would take that first.

Consider going used... I have bought my entire rig used... much of it on the TalkBass forums.. Just scroll down to the classifieds section.. If I had bought my current rig new it would have cost me $2767.98 before taxes.. that's including the bass.. but I went used and paid $1760 for the whole thing.. (in pieces of course... but my point is you can get some decent stuff used..).. Something to consider.. unless you are overseas.. I dont know how that would work and the shipping might be prohibitive..

If you didn't want to go that route you might consider one of those GK light weight combos.. like the GK MB 115 .... 200W.. 35lbs $400 ... whats not to like... If you decide that later you need more.. you can always upgrade.. If you keep on playing believe me you will get GAS..

or maybe one of these...
New line of Carvin micro amps ... I like that 3 way 12 myself.. $500.. 30lbs 250W... sounds good to me..

If I were in your shoes I would consider something along those lines initially.. with an idea of learning more about amps and cabs and configurations and such as you go.. The more you play the more your tastes will change as far as what you feel you want/need out of your equipment..

I've been on talkbass all day...I think I might go the used route.  Thanks!

Its like cars.  Unless you truly desire new, fresh, equipment (that depreciates as soon as you get it lol), you can get mad bargains for great prices.  Ive bought all of my gear off TB and ebay.  Ive never had an issue.

That's a great amp.... but the thing is.. it sells new for $1150.. and there is no way you are going to get that for that price on ebay.. Not with 5 days & 10 hrs left on the bidding.. so what looks great now might wind up spiraling up to more than you want to spend... Where as that MkB rig on TB is a sure thing and you know what the price is...  I got my entire rig (minus the bass.. I got that at a pawn shop for $500 and the Avatar cab I left at church.. played through it tonight.. sounds great.. )

and a JamMan from TB and so far I have had absolutley no issues at all and saved a pretty penny.

thats my only gripe with buying stuff on ebay. u might find a good price, but in the last moments of the auction you either get outbid by like $5 bucks, or the thing skyrockets to way more than you want to spend. so you either have to have bids going on several things or lose like 5 days or so waiting for one item that u might not get (and of course u gotta sit there watchin the item to see what happens). at least with Talkbass or GC (or even craigslist, but thats local) you can setup a deal (GC wont negotiate, but individuals may do so) and not have to worry about somebody edging you out at the last minute.

dont get me wrong, i've bought plenty of things on ebay, just nothing i needed right away (and every auction where i wasnt at my computer watchin when it ended, i lost!! lol)

also check out GC used section online. they post items from different stores across the country. so whereas your local GC might never have good deals (mines never do) there are some awesome deals showing up in some store somewhere else.
For my God... let "Golden Axe" prevail.

That's what turned me off with ebay.. peer to peer selling works better for me...  Most of the guys at TB are pretty straight up.. and there are precautions you can take... to an extent.
