Diverse Gospel Music
« on: July 27, 2010, 04:01:40 PM »
This Saturday my church is having a block party type thing and I'm helping out with the music by playing filler music between musical performances(?).  The theme of the day is "Unity" so I want to have a very diverse musical selection.  However because of my taste in music I have a lot of stuff that the older crowd wouldn't listen to.  I don't really have very many choir songs either.  I have some CCM (Avalon, Nicole C. Mullen, Jaci Velasquez, Rachael Lampa, Sheri Carr, Casting Crowns, Anthony Evans, and tobyMac), but I have mostly gospel.

Can you give me some suggestions of older songs, choir songs, and CCM songs?

Thanks!

Side Note:  Do you think that songs like "Change" by Lecrae are too "meaty" for this type of event.  I don't want the songs to be self centered and bubble gum gospel, but I don't want people to be put off by songs that have too much meat in them.

Idk too many choir songs either...I love Lecrae, and love his song "Change". Some younger may recognize and get what he's saying, while some and especially the older crowd will immediately shut it down thinking it's some ungodly rap song IMO...with that said, I think whatever songs you play, some will like it and some won't. You can't please everybody...

Maybe "Good in the Hood" by Tye Tribett

"Hold On" by Kiki Sheard

I think there's a song about unity on the Clark Sisters last album, but I couldn't tell u how it goes lol

I know it's old, but for a throwback, maybe the song "It's Time" by the Winans. The one with Teddy Riley rappin LOL. "It's time to make that change..."

SB: I know you live in Jersey, if this is a public thing, it would be something I would be interested in coming to...if it is, would you mind PMing me the info?

-thanks

What, exactly, do you mean by filler music. If you aren't a main 'act', then you could play whatever you felt like playing.  :-\ ?/?

I mean music played before the 'acts' start, to fill any significant gaps in between acts (if someone is late, can't make it, issues setting up, etc), if there will be a large gap where the host is talking and s/he wants music played behind him/her, and if there is a gap between the last act to the end of the event.

can you just use a music discovery type of program?

I am assuming you were planning on using CD's for filler songs?

If so (I'm not sure if this is legal so you should check the fine print) use something like pandora or Last.Fm and just choose a random selection of artist that the crowd may like. and let the service choose songs for you. Then if you get a bunch of funny looks just say we don't like this song and it will play the next song.

I am also assuming you have access to a computer, with internet access that is connected to the speaker system.

And if you don't like that

Play some gospel jazz! Better yet do some songs from the Hawkins! or or  play umm .... a bunch of kirk franklin. I think he has quite a bit of variety on his CD's

Also if you need more CD's go to your local library. Its easy to get WOW's gospel greatest hits for like the last 10 years.

Yea, that's what I thought. You can play whatever you know and feel comfortable.  No need to make it any more difficult than it has to be.  ;)

Lisa McClendon-Live at the House of Blues.  Its a great mix-nice, easy grooves, live sound, not to deep and not to "light".  Uphold Me is a great remake of an old tune too.

She was just in Tallahassee in July. She did a thing called "A Night of Music and Marriage with Lisa McClendon". I heard it was awesome.
