Where to start?

I am the drummer for my church but our bass player has been playing for about a year, he plays by ear. Does he need to learn chords? He just dosnt got the groove yet. Any material that you guys could suggest? Also he bought a five string not to long ago even though he hasn't mastered his four in any way. Any help is appreciated!

Bass lessons, playing w/tracks or a metronome to develop his sense of rhythm?

That really hits the mark with this guy. He wants to play like three different instruments instead of focusing on just one, it's aggravating
